COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M freshman Katya Townsend was named to the SEC All-Tournament team after earning a pair of singles and doubles wins this week at the SEC Tournament hosted by the Aggies at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

"Katya [Townsend] played some amazing tennis for us throughout the tournament this week," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "Playing No. 1 in the SEC and playing the best players in the nation each and every match is difficult for the best of the best. It is even more impressive seeing her play at that level as a freshman and it has been nothing less than outstanding."

Townsend, a Coconut Creek, Florida native, helped the Aggies claim wins over Mississippi State and No. 17 Tennessee to advance to the semifinals for the third time since the Aggies joined the league for the 2013 season.

The right-hander topped No. 67 Emma Antonaki of Mississippi State in straight sets before clinching the match against the Volunteers with a three-set win over No. 56 Sadie Hammond. In doubles action, Townsend partnered with classmate Renee McBryde to earn doubles wins against the Bulldogs and Vols.

Townsend became the first Aggie named to the SEC All-Tournament team since Cristina Stancu earned the honor in the 2014 season.

The Aggies await their NCAA Tournament destination after falling to No. 1 Georgia in the semifinals, the NCAA bracket will be announced Monday, April 29, at 5:30 p.m. (CT) on ncaa.com.
