COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M was named a consensus top-five team for the 2019-20 women's basketball season, as media outlets released their "way-too-early" rankings for next season. The Aggies were ranked as high as the No. 4 team nationally.
The Athletic's Richard Deitsch picked the Aggies fourth, Charlie Creme of ESPN.com tabbed the Aggies fifth, and Sports Illustrated's Kellen Becoats ranked the Aggies sixth – making Texas A&M a unanimous top-ten team and a consensus top-five selection.
The Aggies are slated to return 94 percent of their points, 91 percent of their rebounds and 94 percent of their assists, and each of their top six scorers. Leading that group is Chennedy Carter, the nation's second-leading returning scorer at 23.3 points per game and a player Deitsch tabbed as a preseason first-team All-America candidate.
In addition to Carter, the Aggies bring back double-digit scorers in Kayla Wells (15.1 ppg), Aaliyah Wilson (13.8 ppg) and Ciera Johnson (12.0) plus rebound leader N'dea Jones (11.3 rpg) and assist leader Shambria Washington (3.5 apg). "With all of that experience," writes Creme, "Texas A&M should challenge South Carolina for SEC supremacy."
Texas A&M is the only team that reached the 2019 Sweet 16 that returns all five starters for next season. "With about everyone returning to College Station for another ride," notes Becoats, "this could be a very fun year for Texas A&M."
All three publications had Texas A&M as the highest-ranked SEC team, implying the Aggies as preseason favorites to win the league title.
