ST. SIMONS ISLAND. Ga. -- The Texas A&M men's golf team opened play at the 2019 SEC Championships at Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course (par 70/7,005 yards). The Aggies are tied for eighth with Arkansas after the first round on Wednesday, shooting 1-over 281. Auburn and Georgia are currently tied at the top of the leaderboard (-8).

"We got off to a nice start today, we were playing pretty steady golf early on," said head coach J.T. Higgins. "We made a lot of pars and were right in the hunt with the leaders, but we made the turn and just couldn't get a lot of putts to drop. We only had four birdies on the back nine, which makes it tough to compete. We aren't at the top of leaderboard, but we certainly didn't play our way out of it. I like the way we look and the way we are playing, we just need to make a few more birdies tomorrow, especially on that back side, to put us in a good position going into the final round."

Senior Chandler Phillips leads A&M individually as he is tied for 15th after shooting 1-under in the first round. Freshman Sam Bennett is tied for 25th, improving on the back nine to shoot even par in his Championships debut. Junior Dan Erickson and sophomore Walker Lee aren't far behind, tied for 31st after shooting one stroke over par.

Play continues at SEC Championships on Thursday, April 24 as the Aggies are the first off the tee at 6:30 a.m. CT, playing with Arkansas and Tennessee. For updates and results, follow along here.
