On practice…
Â
Really good day today. We worked a lot of situations and had a hard, hard day but worked a lot of shorter practice with a lot of two minutes to the half, last plays of the game, offense, defense, special teams. Had a really good day of working all those special situations and the kids were pretty well locked in for the most part and did a solid job.
Â
On the Monday scrimmage…
Â
I saw two very competitive sides of the ball for the most part. I liked the physicality of the scrimmage. I thought guys got after it. I thought they competed well. We made mistakes, but I thought both sides made plays. I thought the 1's offense came out really, really sharp, had a little lull, then picked it back up and played pretty well. They had some real nice situational work. Defensively I thought the 1's did a really nice job early. Physical up front, made some plays in the back end. Some of the young linebackers you saw a flash at times and then got back to some 1's on 1's as it went and going back and forth. The 2's I think very pleased in that guys were able to function within the scrimmage. No coaches on the field, being able to take signals, being able to communicate, being able to move around for the most part. Had a few missed assignments here and there but for the most part were able to function. Now we didn't play as well with our younger guys as we want to but we did some really good things. You can see the talent got to be more consistent and that's what we've got to build on now that they've kind of gotten that first taste of what a scrimmage is like so they're doing a really good job in that part but I mean our young guys are really coming on with the learning curve. I've been very pleased with their ability to learn and be coached and how we're doing it…so a solid first scrimmage, nowhere close to where we need to be, but we've got to build more depth, got to get the young guys more consistent but you saw flashes of why they're here.
Â
On Baylor Cupp…
Â
Baylor will be out for a while. He had surgery today. He had a plate put on his ankle and tibia on the lower part of his leg so he'll be out for a little while. He got rolled up on, that was the only major injury we had in the scrimmage…when he heals is when he heals. He'll be out for a while.
Â
On the tight-end situation now…
Â
It gives opportunities for some other guys. Glenn Beal's playing well, Jalen Wydermyer is doing a good job. Cam Horry's come over and done a good job…we've got guys there but it's still a loss. Baylor was playing really good football. He was actually having a really good scrimmage was doing a really nice job so we hate to see that. But you know he'll get healed up and get back. He's still going to be one heck of a player and he was having a heck of a camp
Â
On moving someone to tight end…
Â
Listen, we've got plenty of tight ends. Our young tight ends are really good. I mean Glenn Beal is really talented, Wydermyer is really, really talented. So it's a good setup for those guys. And Cam Horry had a really good scrimmage, I mean really did. I think he might have caught two touchdowns in the scrimmage if I'm not mistaken. Those big bodies are doing things. So we got some guys who'll do what we got to do.
