Â
Was the short day because the team wasn't performing the way you wanted them to?
Â
Didn't like that, didn't like the demeanor in which we had. Weren't creating good enough habits and didn't think they were executing at a level and didn't have the focus we need to have. You're either going to create a good habit or a bad habit so we're not gonna sit there and create a bad habit.
Â
That the first time you've done that this fall?
Â
I guess. I'm not gonna sit there and good, bad, hey, not gonna accept that.
Â
How much of it now depends on the leadership to figure it out?
Â
I don't think it's just the leadership I think it's everybody. You don't need leadership to tell you not doing your job or you're not doing it well enough. You've got to pick it up and that's their job also to convey that message, but hey, that's part of growing, that's part of being on a team. We'll see where they go from here.
Â
You blame any of that on the grind, it's so hot and all those things?
Â
Everybody's in a grind. That's what football is about. That's why you win tough games. You embrace the grind. You gotta love it. If you don't like the grind you don't need to play football. There is no easy way to be good in football. So you're either gonna make a choice to do it or you're not.
Â
So where do you go from here with them?
Â
Line up, see who wants to play when we get back on the field on Saturday.
Â
I guess you expect them to come back with their best practice of the fall?
Â
No. I expect the best practice every day. There ain't no best and you pick it up on this day. You should never drop. You can't go higher than your maximum so it should be the same every day. That's what you've got to aspire to and what you've got to be.
Â
What were some of things about today?
Â
Didn't see the effort I needed, didn't see the focus, didn't see the execution, didn't see the detail, didn't see the communication, didn't see the things that make you play good football consistently. Too erratic, too up and down, too lethargic. Not the focus you've got to have. That can never be accepted and I'm never going to accept that. When you're on the field you can say well we'll grind them through it. Okay now you create a bunch of bad habits. Listen, they know what's expected and how to expect it. You gotta do it right.
Â
Would you say…
Â
There ain't an answer for it, they elected not to do it.
Â
Would you say that you are angry?
Â
No I'm not. (I'm) Factual. There's no reason to get mad. Yelling at em ain't gonna make it. Not yelling at em ain't gonna make it. You either do, or you want to do it, or you don't. You can say motivation. Motivation is internal. You got to either have that gene that you accept it and meet the grind or you don't. We didn't meet it today. And I'm not going to sit there and watch that happen. I couldn't.
Â
Did you cut one short last year?
Â
I couldn't tell you. I mean I couldn't answer it truthfully one way or the other. It doesn't just stick out to me.
Â
Is there a pool of guys that's doing it right?
Â
No. Obviously wasn't today. Don't need a pool. Need all. You're only as strong as your weakest link. I know people think that's a cliché, but that's a fact.
Â
You ever have to do that in Tallahassee?
Â
I'm sure I did.
Â
The way things went today is it a good thing or a bad thing that tomorrow's an off day for you?
Â
I dunno. That's up to them. That's was what was on the schedule, that's just the way we elected to do it.
Â
We haven't seen Elijah Blades and Seth Small the last couple of days…
Â
Blades has been out in a yellow jersey, he's been hurt. Small's sick. He had a temperature the other day. He should be alright.
Â
Good to have Quartney Davis back out there today?
Â
Yeah. Good to get them guys back in there. We've got to get them back in there and go, but we've got to make sure they're healthy when they go. We've got two weeks. We ought to have enough time.
Â
Have you picked a 12th Man yet and what is the process behind it?
Â
No. When one shows me, and I'm taking my due diligence. That's consistentcy in performance over a long period of time when you take that on. That's not just a up-and-down thing, that's not a rah-rah thing. It's how you perform and what you do consistently day-in day-out and we'll make that choice when it's appropriate.
Â
Big shoes to fill there too…
Â
And the history of it. Every 12th Man here has been a tremendous person, and that honor. And we want to make sure we do our due diligence that we make that choice and try to do it the best we can.
Â
Talk a little bit about the competition between Colton Prater and Ryan McCollum?
Â
I mean those guys are in there competing every day at center and doing well. They're both playing guard and center, we're moving guys around to center, guard, everywhere. We've got to build depth and have that versatility. You can't ever have enough centers, can't never have enough interior guys beside. You got to learn to play the position beside you too. They're going to have a good competition.
