First Look | Lamar Cardinals

Get to know the Lamar Cardinals, Texas A&M's opponent in the third week of the 2019 season.

A&M Welcomes 2-0 Lamar University to Kyle Field
 
Lamar enters Saturday's matchup with a 2-0 record after wins over Bethel University (65-16) and Mississippi Valley State (23-20 OT). The Aggies and Cardinals have met just once, with Texas A&M picking up a 73-3 victory during the 2014 season. 
  

Head Coaching Matchup
Jimbo Fisher is in year two at Texas A&M. Fisher led the Aggies to a 9-4 record in 2018 and a victory in the Gator Bowl. Fisher has a career record of 93-28. 

Mike Schultz is in his third season as head coach of the Cardinals. Schultz has an 11-14 record at the helm of the Lamar University program. 
   

About Lamar Football
 
Lamar's football program was discontinued following the 1989 season. The program returned in 2010, and the Cardinals have been a part of the Southland Conference since 2011. Lamar is coming off a 7-5 season in 2018. The Cardinals went 6-3 in Southland Conference play and advanced to the school's first-ever FCS Playoff appearance, where they fell to Northern Iowa by the score of 16-13 in the First Round.   

About the 2019 Cardinals
 
In week one's win over Bethel University, Lamar went for 658 yards of offense. Jordan Hoy threw for 226 yards with three touchdown passes. Hoy also added three rushing scores, while Derrion Randle, Cole Starnes and Myles Wanza added rushing touchdowns in the season-opening win. The Cardinals limited Bethel to just 197 yards of offense.  

Last week, the Cardinals rallied for the 23-20 win over Mississippi Valley State. Hoy threw for 233 yards and scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the win. His touchdown with 31 seconds left helped Lamar force the game to overtime. A Bailey Giffen 44-yard field goal won it for the Cardinals in OT.

Hoy is 39-for-63 through the air for 459 yards with three touchdowns and a pair of interceptions in the opening two games. He also leads the ground attack with 118 rushing yards and five touchdowns. The senior was the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2018 after his arrival from Old Dominion.  
 
Myles Wanza, Erik Pizarro and Case Robinson have touchdown receptions for the Cardinals through the opening two games of 2019.  Defensively, Dallas Martin has a team-best 21 tackles, while Michael Lawson has a pair of interceptions for the Cardinals in their 2-0 start.
