NORMAN, Oklahoma – Texas A&M's Courtney Dow shot an opening-round 71 to lead the women's golf team on Friday at the Schooner Fall Classic.
Dow's 1-over score tied her for 13th place after the first 18 of 54 holes. She is five strokes behind tournament leader Clara Moyano of Mississippi State.
"Courtney did a great job of managing her game," said head coach Andrea Gaston. "Her ball-striking was a little off, but she still managed to leave herself in good places for pars on a day where conditions were difficult."
As a team, Texas A&M was 15-over in the First Round, and tied for 10th place. The Aggies are 13 strokes behind tournament leader Oklahoma. Scoring conditions stood in stark contrast to last season's event, with the field's average at 4-over on Friday. Last season, the field averaged just 2-over in the first round.
Blanca Fernández García-Poggio got around the par 70 / 6,048-yard Belmar Golf Club in 72 strokes, which ties for 19th. She had a run of three birdies in four holes at the end of her first nine, including sticking an approach shot to within inches of the hole for an easy tap-in birdie on the par 4 / 406-yard 18th hole.
"Blanca hit 14 greens today despite the windy conditions," Gaston added. "She did a great job navigating around the course despite only having played one practice round at Belmar."
Ava Schwienteck signed for a 5-over 75 on Friday, notching two birdies on the day to tie for 50th. She played Belmar's three par-5s at 1-under on the day, the fourth-best average in the tournament on the long holes.
Amber Park and Brooke Tyree each shot a 7-over 77 in the opening round, tying for 65th. Park had two birdies in the round.
Texas A&M tees off round two on Saturday. Live scoring for the event is available on golfstat.com, and live updates are available on Twitter at @AggieWomensGolf.
