WACO, Texas – Texas A&M men's tennis saw Austin Abbrat, Pierce Rollins, Noah Schachter and Valentin Vacherot reach the fourth round of the singles draw on Saturday at the ITA Texas Regional Championships, hosted by Baylor at the Hurd Tennis Center.
"We had a solid day in singles today with a lot of positives to takeaway," head coach Steve Denton said. "Tomorrow will be a step up in level and I believe our guys will be up to the task. We are excited to see what our guys can do against some very quality opponents. I thought Austin [Abbrat] had a very good day, he is really starting to play at a very high level."
Abbrat posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Joshua Sundaram of Lamar before earning a ranked win over No. 122 Chih Chi Huang of Texas in the third round. The A&M sophomore will take on No. 26 Sumit Sarker of Rice on Sunday.
Rollins, a freshman from Houston, outlasted No. 102 Jonathan Sheehy of ACU to earn his first ranked win before claiming his second-straight three-set win with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 triumph over Evin McDonald of Texas. Rollins will oppose Franco Ribero of Texas Tech on Sunday in the fourth round.
Schachter earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Huntley Allen of SMU before claiming a 0-6, 6-1, 6-0 win over Sebastian Rodrigues of UTSA to reach the fourth round where he is slated to take on Constantin Frantzen of Baylor.
No. 45 Vacherot ousted Dimitrios Azoides of Abilene Christian then defeated Oliver Valentinsson of Incarnate Word to reach the fourth round against Ilgiz Valiev of Texas Tech.
All draws will be posted on the tournament website and results will be updated at the conclusion of each match.
Play is slated to resume at 8 a.m. Saturday with the round of 32 doubles matches followed by the round of 64 in the singles draw. If weather allows, the doubles field will be whittled to eight while the singles draw will be in the round of 16.
Other schools to be represented at the tournament are Abilene Christian, Baylor, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Rice, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Tech, Texas-Arlington, UTSA, Prairie View A&M and UTRGV.
The top doubles team and the singles finalists earn an automatic invitation to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Newport Beach, Calif. The tournament, held from Nov. 6-10, features the champions from each of the 12 regions around the country, as well as several at-large bids.
