WACO, Texas – Texas A&M men's tennis saw Austin Abbrat and Valentin Vacherot win twice to reach the semifinals in the singles draw on Sunday at the ITA Texas Regional Championships, hosted by Baylor at the Hurd Tennis Center.
"As expected, we had to raise our level today against stiffer competition," head coach Steve Denton said. "Austin [Abbrat] backed up yesterday's good tennis with another solid effort today, playing against a very dangerous and in-form player from UTA today. After Val [Vacherot] was able to win comfortably in his morning match, he was pushed to the limit by his opponent. He was able to win a very close tiebreaker in the third set. I thought both guys went for their shots in the important moments and that was the difference in their matches. It is great for our team to have two players in the semifinals tomorrow."
Abbrat advanced to the quarterfinals with a walkover from No. 26 Sumit Sarkar of Rice before earning a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Angel Diaz Jalil of Texas-Arlington. Abbrat is slated to oppose No. 44 Sven Lah of Baylor in the top half of the semifinal draw.
No. 45 Vacherot ousted Ilgiz Valiev of Texas Tech, 6-3, 6-4, then defeated Siem Woldeab of Texas to reach the bottom half of the semifinals against Reed Collier of Texas Tech.
A&M's Noah Schachter reached the quarterfinals after defeating Constantin Franzten of Baylor, 6-2, 6-2, but was tripped up by Lah in his fourth match of the tournament.
All draws will be posted on the tournament website and results will be updated at the conclusion of each match.
Play is slated to resume at 9 a.m. Monday for the semifinal round, the finals are slated to be contested at 1:30 p.m.
Other schools to be represented at the tournament are Abilene Christian, Baylor, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Rice, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Tech, Texas-Arlington, UTSA, Prairie View A&M and UTRGV.
The top doubles team and the singles finalists earn an automatic invitation to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Newport Beach, Calif. The tournament, held from Nov. 6-10, features the champions from each of the 12 regions around the country, as well as several at-large bids.
