AUSTIN, Texas – Texas A&M women's tennis tandem of Jessica Anzo and Dorthea Faa-Hviding captured five wins at the Texas Invitational beginning on Friday, hosted at the Texas Tennis Center.
"Today was an impressive day from Jessica and Dorthea, they both played a high level of tennis and were tough mentally when it mattered," assistant coach Jordan Szabo said. "The Aggies played better tennis the longer the day went. Very impressive for Jessica to get two ranked wins as a freshman and for Dorthea to pull through two long matches after being ill earlier this week. We need to rest up and get ready to bring the energy again tomorrow."
In the singles draw, Anzo reached the semifinals with a pair of ranked wins on Friday, the first two of her career. The redshirt freshman ousted No. 38 Michaela Haet of Rice in straight sets before dispatching of No. 96 Victoria Smirnova, also of Rice, in three sets. Anzo is set to face off against Fernanda Labrana of Texas in the bottom half of the singles draw.
Faa-Hviding opened the day with a win over Isabella Tcherkes Zade of SMU followed by a straight set triumph over Yuna Ito of Miami. The A&M junior will take on No. 80 Daevenia Achong of Miami on Saturday.
In doubles, the A&M duo bested Haet and Diea El Jardi of Rice in the first round to set up a showdown against top-seeded Achong and Selma Cedar of Miami.
Saturday's action will begin at 10 a.m. with two rounds of doubles play followed one round of singles action. The tournament is scheduled to wrap up on Sunday.
Other teams scheduled to take part in the Texas Invitational are Miami (Fla.), Rice, SMU, Tennessee and Texas.
