Texas A&M Men Break Another School Record, Stay in Third at SEC Swimming & Diving
Feb 22, 2019 | Men's Swimming and Diving
ATHENS, Ga. --- The Texas A&M men's swimming and diving team shattered another school record as the Aggies maintained their spot in third place in the team standings at the 2019 Southeastern Conference Championships on Friday at the University of Georgia.
Florida remained in the lead with 868 points, but Missouri pulled within 7.5 points of the Gators with 860.5 points. The Aggies have a four-day total of 673 points, and the Gators, Tigers and Aggies were trailed by Georgia (614.5), Tennessee (603), Alabama (559.5), Kentucky (485), Auburn (473), South Carolina (443) and LSU (353.5).
"We had some things that really needed to happen for us in the prelims and the guys did a great job of making sure we got things done," Aggie head coach Jay Holmes said. "We had a great session in the morning and then tonight I thought we really came ready to compete."
Highlighting the night for the Aggies was the bronze medal and school record effort by the 400 medley relay. The foursome of freshman Shaine Casas, junior Ben Walker, senior Angel Martinez and junior Adam Koster became third first sub-3:05 relay with a time of 3:04.86, which ranks as the third-fastest in the nation this year.
"It's always fun when you put together a really solid relay," Holmes said. "We were third in the race, but that's also the third-fastest time in the country this year. It was a great swim, broke our school record. 3:04 is pretty stinking fast and our guys did a great job of putting it together. They competed real hard and did a great job representing us."
200 Butterfly:
Senior Angel Martinez grabbed fourth in 1:41.68. Also chipping in valuable points were senior Mateo Gonzalez (15th, 1:45.83), freshman Luke Stuart (16th, 1:46.23) and freshman Alberto Gomez (19th, 1:45.66).
100 Backstroke:
A lifetime best of 45.94 by freshman Shaine Casas places 7th, and junior Mike Thibert grabbed 14th in 47.18. Casas was already the second-fastest 100 backstroker in school history. Thibert had a lifetime best of 47.11 in the prelims, which put him No. 7 on Aggies' top 10 performers list.
100 Breaststroke:
Junior Ben Walker placed fifth with a lifetime best of 52.55, making him No. 2 on Aggies' all-time top 10 list in the race. Sophomore Tanner Olson placed 16th in 53.23.
