COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 21 Texas A&M women's tennis hosts UTRGV and Abilene Christian for a Saturday doubleheader at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The Aggies and Vaqueros are set to face off at 2 p.m. (CT) followed by the matchup against the Wildcats at 5 p.m.
The Maroon & White look to open the season with 11 wins in their first 12 matches for the first time since the 2013 season. The Aggies look to match the 2012 and 2013 squads for the best 12-match stretch to open a season in program history, the '13 team raced out to a 15-1 mark before falling in the NCAA Championship Finals.
"Our team is excited to be back competing on our home courts once again," Texas A&M women's tennis head coach Mark Weaver said. "We are always looking at ways to improve and sharpen our game especially with SEC play just around the corner."
The Aggies split a pair of tough road matches last weekend at Illinois and No. 19 Oklahoma. The Maroon & White's rally against the Illini fell just short, dropping their first match of the season, 4-3. A&M freshman Renee McBryde turned in a straight set win to start the swing of momentum into the Aggies' favor. Aggie freshman, Katya Townsend, turned around the match on court one to win in three sets. With the final two matches into the third set, Illinois clinched the win on court two followed by a gritty three-set win by Riley McQuaid on court five to secure her 12th straight victory.
Battling back from their first defeat of the year, the Aggies came out swinging and earned an impressive 5-2 victory over No. 19 Oklahoma in Norman. After claiming the doubles point for the eighth time in 10 matches this spring the Aggies secured singles wins by McBryde, Tatiana Makarova, Dorthea Faa-Hviding and Jayci Goldsmith to vanquish the Sooners.
A&M has posted a 48-9 singles record and 19-4 doubles mark in dual matches this spring. Faa-Hviding has a team-high five match win streak while sophomore Riley McQuaid has won 12 of her last 13 matches.
Goldsmith, a freshman from Dripping Springs, Texas, earned the highest ranking for the Aggies in the Feb. 20 edition of the Oracle/ITA Division I National Singles Rankings. The lefthander inched up three spots to No. 86 as she stands at 9-1 this spring and 18-3 overall. Townsend and McBryde are the lone ranked doubles team for the Aggies, entering the rankings at No. 52 after earning the Aggies' first ranked doubles win of the season at Oklahoma.
The Aggies host SMU on Tuesday in their final tune-up before SEC matches begin next weekend at the Mitchell Tennis Center. A&M will host No. 37 Auburn on March 1 at 6 p.m. to open league play followed by a Sunday date against No. 43 Alabama on March 3 at noon.
