Aggies Take Second at Burns Intercollegiate
Feb 23, 2019 | Men's Golf
Lihu'e, Kaua'i – The Texas A&M men's golf team earned a second-place finish at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Wailua Golf Course (par 72/6,991 yards). The Aggies shot 21-under 843 as a team (281-283-279), trailing only Arizona State, which shot 24-under to win the event.
"We had a much better effort today, the guys came ready to compete," said head coach J.T. Higgins. "I'm really proud of this team, we took ASU to the wire and cut it two with a couple holes to go. We really fought the whole round and had great rounds by Walker [Lee] and Sam [Bennett] for 68's. Dan [Erickson] really grinded out a good round of 2-under par 70 and made some clutch birdie putts."
I'm proud of these guys, we played a great round today. If we can put three rounds together like that, with that kind of intensity and focus, it showed that we could play with anybody in the country."
Sophomore Walker Lee led the Aggies with an impressive second-place individual finish. He birdied six times in the third round to shoot 9-under in the tournament (67-72-68=207). Senior Chandler Phillips tied for 22nd, shooting 3-under (72-68-73=213), while freshman Sam Bennett jumped 20 spots to finish tied for 30th at 2-under par (75-71-68=214).
The Aggies will have a week of before returning to action on Sunday, March 3, as they begin the Querencia Cabo Collegiate in Los Cabos, Mexico.
