GWANGJU, South Korea – Former Texas A&M diver Alaïs Kalonji competed in the 2019 FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea at the Aquatics Centre on Tuesday. This is the 18th World Championships.
Kalonji represented France and placed 26th in the preliminary round of the 10-meter platform. She had a final score of 252.60, with her highest score coming from her third dive. The Rennes, France native did a 6243D dive, an arm stand, back double somersault with a one and a half twist in the free position to score 67.20. She also did an inward 3.5 somersault to score a 62.40 in her second dive.
"Alaïs was very consistent with the exception of her fourth round dive," said head diving coach Jay Lerew. "This dive jumped her out of the top 12. This was her first experience at the world level. Her next stop will be the European Championships."
Kalonji served as a captain for the Texas A&M women's swimming and diving program for the 2018-19 season. In her final competition for the Maroon and White, she finished sixth at the NCAA Championships with a score of 305.30. She was named the diving MVP by her team, while also being named to the All-SEC Second Team in the platform dive.
