Q&A Session: Quartney Davis

Question: What made you decide to come to Texas A&M?
QD: I love the culture. When I came here to watch the games the fans and the environment were really cool. When I was getting recruited I was with Christian Kirk and Armani Watts, the players showed a lot of love, so the recruiting was fun.
Q: What was the biggest adjustment for you from high school to SEC level of play?
QD: First, the size of the players was the biggest difference. Also, the speed of the game and going against players who have already adjusted to playing at this level was another challenge. They were very smart, so I had to figure out how to beat them without my athletic ability alone.

Q: What advice would you give to a high school player going through the recruitment process?
QD: I'd say to stay focused. First handle what you have to do in high school, and then worry about what you'll need to know college. For me, I wanted a place that I'd feel comfortable. Being a receiver, I knew I was going to get a great opportunity to make plays here.
Q: Are there any players you looked up to for inspiration or modeled your game after?
QD: I've watched a lot of Keenan Allen, because I like his route-running and press releasing. I watch DeAndre Hopkins, because of how he attacks the ball. Stefon Diggs can really stick his foot in the ground and get in-and-out of his routes. So those are a few guys I like to watch and focus on.

Q: What are your goals for your junior season?
QD: First, I'd say it's to win games. My team winning the games is the most important thing to me.
Q: How much of an asset is it, having a strong core of veteran receivers along with a veteran QB?
QD: It's a difference maker having the experience and being able to tell the younger guys what's going to come and what to expect. We understand each other's lingo. I feel like our chemistry has gotten a lot better from being able to communicate more effectively. Also, we have a lot of fun, and when you're having fun you play at your best.

Q: What's your favorite thing about Coach Fisher?
QD: I admire his passion for the game, and how he drives all the players. Just being around him and feeling his energy for the game pushes me to work hard, so I come out here every day and give him my all.
Q: What's your least favorite thing about fall camp?
QD: It is very hot, but there's really no way getting around that. So, I just find a way to deal with it. Other than that, fall camp is pretty fun to me. I like getting to learn all the new stuff, and it gets us into shape.

Q: Out of all the defensive backs on the team, which one has the best chance guarding you one on one?
QD: I think all of them could have a pretty good chance, depending on the situations. I like going against all of them, because each of them play different. So, I have to switch up my game depending on who I'm going up against. It kind of helps me for a game situation, because I have to come up with new ways to beat those guys. I really enjoy being able to compete with those guys.
Q: What is your favorite moment playing football?
QD: My first practice ever, I was practicing against the older team. A guy fumbled the ball and I fell on it to recover it. I didn't understand much about football other than playing backyard football with my friends, so I only kind of knew what I was doing. When I went home I told my mom I recovered a fumble. I was so excited that I told everybody that I could tell.

Q: Who is a professional athlete that inspires you?
QD: LeBron James is my favorite athlete. I like the way he handles himself. He does everything right. He gets criticized a lot, but you can tell it never really gets to him. He's a mentally strong person and I really like that.
Q: Who in your life served as your primary inspiration and motivator?
QD: Lately, that person for me has been Coach Craig. He has helped me in a tremendous way. He helped me do a complete turnaround with the way I think and act. He helped me be a man. I can truly say that Coach Craig is one of my favorite people, because I can't tell you how much he's helped me out. Him and Coach Fisher, both.

Q: What do you like to do in College Station when you aren't playing football?
QD: I watch football videos, interviews and I like to learn new things. I like to watch stuff about history, occasionally. I like football history, American history, science history, all of it. I watch documentaries on Netflix, Hulu or I just use Google. The latest documentary I watched was the Odell Beckham one. It was inspiring to see that he had to go through a lot of criticism, yet he still was able to rise to the top. Also, I like watching Allen Iverson documentaries, but he's a bit much. I also watched a little something about Steve Smith, the way he played gets my blood pumping, for sure. I don't really do too many other activities outside of football.
Q: What's your favorite restaurant?
QD: Every time I go out to eat, I ask Jhamon Ausbon. He knows all the different restaurants in College Station. He's really big on food, so any time I'm hungry and don't want to eat here I hit him up to ask. He usually does really well, I haven't been to a place he told me to try and I didn't like it. There's this one breakfast place called Stella's Southern Café that's my favorite.

Q: What's your favorite sports team?
QD: I don't really have one. If I'm watching a team, it's really a specific player I like to key in on. However, I do like to predict who I think will go to the Super Bowl or the NBA Finals. I don't really watch anything besides the NFL and NBA. This year I think the Saints and the Patriots will to go to the Super Bowl. Obviously since I like LeBron, I like to think the Lakers are making it to the Finals.
Q: What are your aspirations after college?
QD: First and foremost, I plan to play in the NFL. After that, I want to make programs where children that aren't as fortunate can be inspired. I want to let them know there's opportunities for everybody.
