Gittens Named SEC Women’s Field Athlete of the Year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tyra Gittens was named the 2020 SEC Women's Field Athlete of Year, the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tyra Gittens was named the 2020 SEC Women's Field Athlete of Year, the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon.
 
"It's a hard earned and well deserved accomplishment, and to be recognized by the coaches says a lot," Head Coach Pat Henry said. "Coaches know talent and she is a talented woman. She pushes herself to get better all the time and she's only scratching the surface right now, I think she is going to be really good."
 
Most recently she was named the 2020 USTFCCCA South Central Region Female Field Athlete of the Year, the second time in her career to garner the award.
 
Gittens scored 21 points at the 2020 SEC Indoor Championships, she was recognized with the Cliff Harper Award as the top female point scorer in the meet. She set an SEC meet record and Texas A&M record winning the pentathlon (4,391), also placed third in high jump (1.85m/6-0.75) and fourth in long jump (6.27m/20-7).
 
She ranks No. 1 in the nation in the pentathlon, No. 3 in high jump and No. 11 in long jump. Gittens is the only female to be entered in three individual events at the 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
 
The multi-athlete begins her championships on Friday, March 13 with the start of the pentathlon at 12:15 a.m. CT. She competes in the open long jump Friday night at 7:55 p.m. CT, and the open high jump on Saturday, March 14 at 2:15 p.m. CT.
