Three Questions with Jo Evans

What are your thoughts on the softball team's 2020 season ending the way it did?
"It's disappointing to have our season canceled and to have our players not be able to compete right now. It's such a big part of their lives and a big part of their experience here at A&M. I know that our players are really disappointed and our staff is disappointed, but we also understand we don't have any control over this situation. We have to accept what has happened. There's a lot of questions and not a lot of answers right now, so we just move through this and make the most of it."

What did you tell your team?
"I had the opportunity to be with our staff and team last Thursday when the NCAA announced that the championships would be canceled. There were a lot of questions in our player's minds, but it was nice to at least be able to be in that room with them looking them eye to eye. We explained to them what we do know and also just making sure to reaffirm that they've done everything they can. I appreciate all of their hard work. I appreciated how they competed and how they grew together as a team. They really took care of our softball program. I reminded the seniors that adage we use 'every day a legacy' – that's all over Davis Diamond throughout the walls and halls – it's the message I want them to understand. Every day you leave your legacy, from the day you get on campus and to the day you leave campus. No two weeks, two months, or shortened season is going to take away from what you've done in your career. I want all of our players to understand that. They are valued and they have worked really hard. We as a staff have acknowledged their hard work."

What are you doing with your time?
"I have spent a lot of time on the telephone, a lot of time on conference calls and teleconference calls. We had our first staff meeting of the week, remotely so on Zoom teleconference, so we can see each other's faces. We're talking about our season and how we move forward. Our players are doing something that I think is really fun. Each player is going to post photos in our GroupMe to let us know what she's doing. We are referring to this as 'Season Officially Over.' It's just keeping us all up to date and we're just having a little bit of fun with it. One thing about all of this is that we are so used to spending so much time together and having so much fun together, and interacting, and then all of a sudden in a blink of an eye it's gone. It's a chance for us to spend some time together reconnecting and being in touch. On Tuesday we did a teleconference with all 25 of our players and staff, so it was fun to see their faces. It's just that reminder of how much we love each other, how much we enjoy each other, how much we enjoy spending time together, and how much we miss that. I'm sure these days are going to get long. We're trying to be productive. There's only so much you can do in your house, so it's certainly giving us all the chance to reflect, take some time and feel some gratitude for how fortunate we are to get to do what we do."
