A Message to the 12th Man from Ross Bjork

Howdy, Aggies.

The only way to start this message is to say THANK YOU to our incredible student-athletes, coaches and staff, amazing individuals who join together to create the Athletics Department at Texas A&M University. It's been said that the true character of an individual or organization is revealed during challenging times. These aren't just any "challenging times". We are finding our way through new, uncharted territory, a situation unlike anything experienced in our lifetime.

You know what really hit me this week? Wednesday (March 18), my calendar reminded me we were scheduled to have our monthly All-Staff meeting. That's an event I really look forward to, a time to re-set and to re-group, connect with each other, talk about plans, and communicate clearly what is happening within our various sports and departments. I really missed seeing everyone, a result of this unusual situation with which we are dealing. It was that lack of personal interaction that affirmed to me that we function as one large family.

Earlier this week, I mentioned in my opening words that we all have questions; we simply don't have all the answers about what happens next. At the time, it was the fear and perhaps a little panic, not knowing much about COVID-19. A few days later, we know a little bit more as more precautions are being implemented. We understand how incredibly fast this virus can spread. In having that knowledge, we take steps to do all we can as one of the largest Universities in the country to help stop the spread, or at least slow it down. We are learning to be flexible, have contingency plans in place, and pivot those plans based on new developments during a fluid situation that keeps us focused every minute.

We've also learned that we are always stronger when we work together. These uncommon times created one of the most focused, cohesive efforts within a department I've ever witnessed. There have been daily conference calls and virtual meetings that served to put into motion a coordinated effort. The University is working diligently, relentlessly, to insure on-line classes are ready and that every student, those who are still on campus or those at home, are in the safest environment possible.

Events we hold close as some of our most revered traditions like Aggie Muster, Big Event, Ring Day, Commencement and so many others have been postponed or cancelled. Some have waited all their lives to experience some of these events because of the "spirit that can ne'er be told". Aggies respect tradition and each other. That's why there is great disappointment. But there is no virus, no unprecedented event in modern day college athletics like the one we are experiencing that can compromise the power of the Spirit of Aggieland. These events will return. We will be back on this campus. I've learned that Aggies are never really away from each other, we are "social-distancing", held together by that uncommon bond. There is no place I would rather be than with you, right here, right now.

Please continue to follow the link on 12thman.com to information the University is providing. The University's leadership team, especially President Young, have done a truly incredible job in keeping us up to date with breaking developments related to COVID-19. As part of President Young's Executive team, it has been impressive to hear my colleagues at the University take part in collaborative conversation that always make students, faculty and staff their number one priority. Some decisions have not been easy, but all have been necessary.

President Young may have said it best in his impressive letter to the Aggie family. It has taken all of us in applying the traits and values that guide our daily efforts, both in times of triumph and in times of challenge: leadership, loyalty, integrity, excellence, respect for each other, and selfless service. We've seen all of these values actively playing a part in binding us closer together, focused on the common goal of protecting and supporting each other.

One final thought. Since my arrival on campus, I made it my goal to personally meet and get to know as many people as possible, introducing myself as your Athletics Director. This has always been important to me; after all, though maybe an overused term, we are all on the same team, and pulling in the same direction is critical to our success and to our vision. If you think it has been a little overwhelming, you are right. Nothing is accomplished alone, no matter how tough these times may seem. It is my hope, however, that you see the importance of our face-to-face meetings or general interaction when I first arrived. After all, when engaging in something like we have experienced over this past week, we need to know who is on the team. I'm not some stranger, someone who never leaves the office, who is asking you to stay focused and dedicated to winning this battle. We know each other, and I'm proud we are in this together.

We will be better when this is all over, more efficient, more appreciative of the part we play each day, and most importantly, we will be a stronger team. Never take a moment for granted. We've learned it can all disappear in a matter of moments. Texas A&M Athletics needs you more than ever. No matter your role as a fan, donor, ticket holder, student, staff member, or coach, today, this moment, is our day to be the leaders and I am proud to serve as your Athletics Director.

Gig'Em.
Ross
