COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Veteran Texas A&M athletics trainer David Weir was named to the 2020 induction class of the Texas State Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Honor.
Â
A native of Brenham, Texas, Weir joined Texas A&M Athletics in 1990 and has served the health and medical needs of thousands of student-athletes from virtually every sport on campus over the past 30 years. Currently, Weir oversees the athletic training and medical needs of the equestrian team and the men's and women's golf teams. Previously, Weir served as the head athletic trainer for football from 2001-15 and baseball from 1994-99.
Â
"This is an incredible honor," Weir said. "The Texas State Athletic Trainers Association created the Hall of Honor in 2018. To be inducted in only the third class is a real honor and a surprise. It is always appreciated when mentors and people in your profession recognize you for your accomplishments and the contributions that you have made to the profession."
Â
Added TSATA Region 7 Representative Jody Moore, "The TSATA Hall of Honor was created to honor Athletic Trainers across the State of Texas who have made a significant contribution to the profession. David has no doubt served our profession diligently through the years. He has served the athletic training profession selflessly as the chair of Texas Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers since 2007, and been an active member of that board since 2006. He has also served on numerous committees through the Southwest Athletic Trainers' Association. Needless to say, he is deserving of this selection!"
Joining Weir in the 2020 Class were: Ken Murray, Bill Grant, Mike Vara, Bubba Wilson, Raul Zamarripa, Ken Lancaster, Brittany Webb and Spanky Stephens. Due to the pandemic, the date and time of the induction ceremony will be announced at a later date.
Â
A member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), Weir currently serves as the Concussion Manager for the Texas A&M University Athletics Department. He coordinates and ensures the compliance of the Concussion Protocol. He presents frequently to athletic training classes and other groups in proper concussion management.Â
Â
Weir has served on numerous national committees including NATA Public Relations, College and University. He has served as Liaison to the NCAA Baseball Rules Committee and the American Football Coaches Association. He has chaired several committees for the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association (SWATA). In 2006, Texas Governor, Rick Perry appointed him as a member of the Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers for the State of Texas. In 2007, Governor Perry appointed him Chair of this board. He continues to serve in this position. The board regulates all athletic trainers in the State of Texas.Â
Â
Previously, Weir received the National Athletics Trainer's Service Award from NATA in 2013 and the Eddie Wojecki Award from SWATA in 2008.
