BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Plowboys delivered a four-run sixth inning to defeat the Farmers, 4-2, and take the opener of the Maroon & White World Series Wednesday afternoon on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
The Plowboys threw the combo of Dustin Saenz and Mason Ornelas to stymie the Farmers' offense. Ornelas was awarded the win in relief, yielding one run on two hits while fanning two in 2.1 innings. Saenz was called for the start and was solid, giving up only one unearned run while striking out five in 4.2 frames.
Offensively for the Plowboys, Zane Schmidt and Trevor Werner were key. Schmidt went 2-for-2 with one run, one RBI, and one walk, while Werner was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one stolen base.
Bryce Miller got the start for the Farmers, working through 4.0 scoreless frames, yielding just two hits and two free bags while fanning six. Alex Magers was saddled with the loss in relief, after giving up four runs on five hits while striking out one in 1.2 innings, and Chris Farrell recorded the final out of the sixth.
Ryan Targac and Will Frizzell led the Farmers, Targac recorded a huge solo blast in the sixth and Frizzell tallied one hit, two walks, and one RBI. Six total Farmers recorded a hit in the game.
The Plowboys lead the series 1-0 over the Farmers, and look to clinch the Omaha Cup. Texas A&M caps off the final two games of the World Series Thursday (7 p.m.) and Friday (3 p.m.).
