Former Texas A&M Standout Brazier Nominated for Male World Athlete of the Year

Reigning 800-meter World Champion and former Texas A&M NCAA Champion Donavan Brazier is one of 10 nominees for Male World Athlete of the Year.

MONACO – Reigning 800-meter World Champion and former Texas A&M NCAA Champion Donavan Brazier is one of 10 nominees for Male World Athlete of the Year, recently announced by World Athletics.

During the 2020 season, the middle-distance specialist ran world-leading times in the indoor 800m and outdoor 800m, while winning all seven of his races over all distances.

On Feb. 8, he bettered his American Indoor 800m record with a time of 1:44.22 at the Millrose Games in New York City. It was the second consecutive year he set an American record at the Millrose Games in the 800m after breaking the 26-year old record in 2019 when he ran 1:44.41.

After months without any competitive Diamond League meetings, Brazier recorded his world-leading outdoor 800m time of 1:43.15 in Monaco on August 14.

During his one season in Aggieland, Brazier won the 2016 NCAA Championship in the outdoor 800m with an American record and collegiate record time of 1:43.55.

A three-way voting process determines the finalists. The World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family casts their votes by email, while fans can vote online via the World Athletics' social media platforms. Individual graphics for each nominee will be posted on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram this week; a 'like' on Facebook and Instagram or a retweet on Twitter will count as one vote.

The World Athletics Council’s vote counts for 50% of the result, while the World Athletics Family’s votes and the public votes counts for 25% of the final result.
