BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is collecting donations throughout the month of November for its 20th annual AggiesCAN food drive benefitting the Brazos Valley Food Bank and the 12thCan pantry.
AggiesCAN, which started in 2000, has evolved into the largest student-athlete volunteer-run canned food drive in the nation. The AggiesCAN food drive has three ways to amass its collections: the campus competition, a text-to-donation option and team-by-team collections. There will be no in-person donation drop offs at home events.
Â
"AggiesCAN is a great way to give back directly to the Brazos Valley Community," said SAAC President Rachel Bernardo, a junior on the Cross Country and Track & Field teams. "We like to focus our efforts on supporting those who always show up to support us on game day, and through the virtual format of this year's collection we have an even easier way to do that."
Â
In conjunction with the AggiesCAN food drive, Whataburger is donating $1,000 to the Brazos Valley Food Bank. H-E-B is matching donations up to $5,000.
Â
The goal for this year is to provide 50,000 meals between monetary donations and canned goods collected. The text-to-donate option goes directly to Brazos Valley Food Bank and can be utilized by texting AggiesCAN (as one word, no spaces) to 313131. A $1 donation amounts to five meals donated.
Â
The eight organizations coming together to participate in the campus competition include the Ross Volunteer Company, The Corps of Cadets, Memorial Student Center (MSC), Class Councils, University Interfraternity Council (IFC), Liberal Arts Student Council (LASC), Collegiate Panhellenic Council (CPC) Graduate and Professional Student Government (GPSG).
Â
"I'm really excited to be able to connect our athletics department with our campus community," Bernardo said. "Having support from fellow student organizations during the trying times of COVID-19 really embodies the Aggie Spirit."
Â
Texas A&M Athletics will have team-by-team collections run from Nov. 9 through Nov. 20. Each team will have a scheduled time for drop off at the Slocum Nutrition Center.
Â
SAAC is a student organization comprised of student-athlete representatives from each Texas A&M Athletics team. The group advocates for student-athlete welfare in the Athletics Department, on campus, within the SEC and within the NCAA while developing as leaders.
