Aggies Win Lid Lifter vs. Army West Point with School-Record 22 Ks
Feb 21, 2020 | Baseball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A two home run night by Zach DeLoach and a school-record strikeout performance by the pitching staff powered the No. 21 Texas A&M Aggies to a 12-3 win against the Army West Point Black Knights Friday evening on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
Paced by Asa Lacy's career-high 14 strikeouts, the pitching staff recorded 22 strikeouts on the night, marking their fourth 10-plus strikeout performance of the season. The tally was most strikeouts in a game in school history, topping a one-man 21-strikeout performance by Jeff Granger on April 2, 1993 against Lubbock Christian.
Lacy (2-0) earned the win, yielding one run on four hits and one walk over 14 innings. In relief, Mason Ornelas pitched 1.1 perfect innings, striking out all four batters faced. Chris Weber also fanned four, including one to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth with the Aggies' nursing a 4-1 lead.
The Aggies trailed for the first time this season when the Black Knights plated a run in the top of the first. The Aggies didn't take long to answer, plating four in the bottom of the first. Zeros went up on the board until the bottom of the sixth when the Aggies scored five more, followed by one in the seventh and two in the eighth.
Offensively, DeLoach and Hunter Coleman led the Aggies. DeLoach's two dingers accounted for five RBI. Coleman batted 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI. Six other Aggies recorded a hit and the offense as a whole recorded their fifth double-digit hitting performance of the season.
The Aggies kept the winning streak alive, improving to 6-0, while the Black Knights drop to 1-3.

TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach Rob Childress
On the team's performance in tonight's win…
"People will look at the box score tomorrow and not realize what a dogfight it was. Our guys did a wonderful job. They [Army] got a big two-out run in the first, they had all the momentum, and we came back and answered with four. We had a chance to extend the lead in the second and fourth and we didn't do it. Just like that it was game on. Army loaded the bases in the sixth and had all the momentum. Chris Weber had enough courage to get a strikeout and a ground ball to get us off the field. All in all, it was a hard-fought Friday night win, even though the box score may not show that tomorrow. Army was very prepared to play."
On Asa Lacy's career-high 14-strikeout performance…
"I thought he was really good. That being said, give Army some credit. They were incredibly competitive, and they took lots of pitches from him. We were fortunate to get him through the fifth He was having some trouble getting through the fifth, but he made some pitches to do that. That's what you need, and our bullpen made it stand up, especially with Chris [Weber] and Mason [Ornelas] coming in to finish it up."
Junior left-hand pitcher Asa Lacy
On the change between the first and second inning…
"It's been a huge focus, really coming back from summer ball. We weren't very efficient in the first inning obviously. I think that it was more that I had to do it. I had to do it to save our bullpen and really just pitch to contact more, and also realize that there's eight solid guys behind me and that they're going to do their job as well."
Senior centerfielder Ray Alejo
On the Aggies controlling the game and playing their ball…
"It's so easy to go up there when there is no stress on us as an offense because of our pitching staff. The guys around me and our lineup, one to nine, there's guys everywhere that can do something. So, for me, I just go up their stress free, and get on base so the guys can knock me in because I know they will."
Junior rightfielder Zach DeLoach
On the feeling of his recent offensive success…
"Just keep at it. I don't think anything has changed as far as preparation. I talked about it last week but the preparation and mentality that I have right now, just being aggressive and getting swings off, that's what I'm doing. I'm just hunting the pitch that I want to see and when it shows up over the plate then I hit it and that's all there is too it."
