Catchin' Up with Kellen Mond
Mar 30, 2020 | Football
12th Man Productions' Will Johnson caught up with quarterback Kellen Mond late last week for the department's radio show, Studio 12.
Miss that conversation? Catch up with Kellen below.
Let's just start with where are…how have you been?
Still back home in San Antonio and kind of just been relaxing. Schoolwork has started to pile up a little with classes starting online on Monday, but also just trying to get my work in, but obviously a lot more freedom.
But you're no stranger to online classes, are you?
It's actually what I like. I like being in online classes. I don't think anything kind of changed. Just getting used to the new syllabus, and new due dates was kind of the hard part. But I feel like the only difference now is I can wake up when I want, I do work when I want.
What's not different is football season is on the horizon…in what ways are you keeping yourself in football shape? What ways are you prepping for the upcoming season?
So I'm still working out, both throwing and lifting. Obviously, a lot of stuff is closing, but still trying to get my work in, no matter what. I have a trainer down here who I work out with and then also a couple of receivers around the city who can catch balls for me that are pretty good.
So I've talked to your dad before and he mentioned he was a receiver…can he catch passes from you?
He actually did say he could the other day, but, I mean, I'm not gonna let him do that, get hurt or anything. I think his day has passed. I'll leave it to the young kids.
(laughter) Sort of in that vein, how much communication do you have with your teammates right now?
Still a lot of communication. And, just try to make sure guys are still working out, still staying in some type of physical shape. That's the main thing. We really don't know when this virus can push over, when we can go back to school or anything. It's kind of everything is just unknown. So, stay the course.
Especially in a time like this, do you have to center your communication around the skill position players you have to be so in sync with during the season?
I don't really think so. I think being able to talk to the Offensive Linemen and defensive players, I mean, I'm close to everybody on the team. I could pretty much talk with anybody, and it doesn't really have to be about football. Just trying to stay in contact with everybody and make sure everybody's ready to get back on the same page when we get back.
I think we all can't wait for that moment. If you can get back with your team, start working out, and getting prepped for the 2020 season, it's uncertain how much time you will have together though. If you got back, and only had an August camp, then kicked off the season…would that be enough prep time for you and your team?
I think so. Those guys who early enrolled would be put on the same page as the guys who were going to come in the summer with no spring ball. With the combination of a bunch of young guys with talent and guys with a bunch of experience who have talent, I think August could be good for us. Obviously, we don't control some of that stuff, but I think we'll definitely be ready.
I know we all will. When it's all over, when we get through it, we will all need some football after this, won't we…
I think so. It's crazy. You can't really watch anything on TV, anything. If it's not a throwback, then there's really nothing on TV. I'm looking forward to it. I know everybody is missing football. I can't wait 'til the football season starts.
