Catchin' Up with Jhamon Ausbon
Apr 30, 2020 | Football
12th Man Productions' Will Johnson caught up with wideout Jhamon Ausbon on a recent edition of the department's radio show, Studio 12.
Tell us how you're doing as we all wait it out…
Not too bad. Just trying to make sure I stay in shape and keep a nice little balance between school and football.
What kind of work can you get in right now?
It's actually a good time to find out the best way to be innovative around the house. I've been running miles and hills, just doing things I haven't been able to do in the past.
The online classes, has that been any different for you?
I've been in online classes. I think it's just the uncertainty. That's kind of killing me. Just not knowing. But, I've been familiar with online classes before, so it's not complicated.
If I asked you what is your greatest concern right now with all this… What would it be?
I think when you have a long off season and so much preparation going into a season, you don't want to miss out on any opportunity to grow and bond as a team. So my only concern is that we're not able to bond right now as a team and create that offseason grind. So that's the only negative, but hopefully we'll make up for it in the summer.
In the offseason, you guys do a lot of seven-on-seven type stuff. It helps with timing. How much of a concern is it missing out on those moments? Does that hurt the receiving corps and pass game?
Yeah, that's huge. Just some of those things that you can't mimic on your own. So you need everybody together. But with all this social distancing, it's been hard. But we stay connected and stay talking. At least watching film together online, and using our resources. We can make up for at least half of that. But you're right. There's nothing like actually getting those passes in seven-on-seven.
What kind of film do you watch right now? How much can you watch?
Like two hours a day. Recap this season, and going back over the plays in detail. Just looking at it from a different perspective, and trying to correct any old mistakes.
There's a lot of talk about how much time players need to prepare for a season once they are given the go ahead to get back together. In your mind, how much practice and workout time together would be required for you to be fully ready for the football season?
It's not really a specific time. I think we would know when it happens. It definitely starts with the freshmen getting comfortable, getting bonded with them, getting close with those guys and showing them how to do things. Kind of installing that culture. I think the faster we do that everything else will go smooth.
Yourself, a Kellen Mond, a Buddy Johnson, a Keldrick Carper, guys that have been around for a while...would you guys be okay even if it was minimal time?
Yeah, you're right. We will be fine. Guys coming in, that will be the only concern.
When all this is over, do you think this country's gonna need football?
Yeah, I've been thinking about it, and it's like we have that one day a week where we all come together and share 60 minutes. Just kind of come together and have a good time and nothing else matters. So I think after all this stuff, there's definitely a time of need for football and the joy it brings.
