Track & Field: Message of Unity
Jun 09, 2020 | Track and Field
Members of Texas A&M's track and field team released this message of solidarity and unity on social media on Tuesday.
"The Texas A&M Track & Field team is home to a widely diverse population of student-athletes. We come from all walks of life and are able to unite under the Aggie identity. The racial injustice that our African-American community faces on a daily basis in this country is a systematic issue that has long been ignored. The current protest and riots in our country are a sign that we are ready to demand and fight for justice and real change. We give our sincere condolences to the family and friends of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless others who have lost their lives to racism and hate. The race for equality is not a sprint, it's a marathon. We must unite to make a change. The first step in changing the narrative of our society is that we're going to have to recognize inequalities and start having those uncomfortable conversations that accompany this awareness. Work to uplift the voice of the oppressed and bring attention to the fight for equality. Go beyond posting on social media. Actively look for petitions to sign and ways to donate to victims and protestors. The answer to this problem does not include ignoring our differences. Our culture needs to learn how to celebrate our differences in a way that promotes unity. Texas A&M Track & Field is a great model of celebrating each other's differences and supporting one another for a common goal. The same concept applies to differences of race, background and heritage. Our country needs to learn to see these differences and see how beautiful it is when this country comes together. We're committed to standing with the black community, we are all part of this team and we will not accept acts of racism toward our teammates. As Aggies, we stand as one. And our voices will be heard from many miles away. Today I ask you to stand with us. God has gifted us with a voice, so do not let that voice go to waste. Even if you don't understand what's going on right now, take this time to educate yourself and those around you. We are the Aggies, the Aggies are we. We stand united as an Aggie family to denounce the hatred that so passionately burns in our country. Hate is not an Aggie value, and we encourage you to stand with us in the battle against racism."
