Women’s Tennis Claims Six Victories on Day One of Rice Invitational
Oct 28, 2021 | Women's Tennis
HOUSTON – Texas A&M women's tennis registered a strong start on the first day of action at the Rice Invitational from the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Thursday. The Maroon & White amassed six total victories divvied up between two doubles and four singles triumphs.
Play began in the doubles competition, with the Aggies taking on opponents from SMU and UT-Arlington. Jeanette Mireles and Elise Robbins put A&M's first win of the day on the board with an 8-5 result against Cambelle Bouchard and Emma Gretzky of SMU. Renee McBryde and Gianna Pielet teamed up for the team's second victory of the day against the Mustangs, defeating Drew Morris and Reka Patel in a grueling 9-7 battle.
The team transitioned to singles play later in the morning with heavy winds playing an instrumental role on all six courts. Pielet notched a strong 6-2, 6-4 win over Houston's Gabriela Giraldo, with Jeanette Mireles following shortly thereafter with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Tara Gorinsek of UTA. Ellie Pittman secured the first collegiate victory of her young career, taking down UTA's Ana Paula Jimenez in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 match. Senior Isa Di Laura closed things out with a 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 come-from-behind thriller over Azul Pedemonti of Houston.
Following her win, the Houston native Mireles climbs to 4-1 on the season, warranting the highest win percentage on the roster at .800. Di Laura and Pielet each climbed above the .500 mark with their respective victories.

On the team's performance Thursday…
"Today was a productive day. Overall, we need to be more assertive and ready to play in doubles from the first point tomorrow. We took four to five games to really hit our stride, which is far too long in a shortened doubles format. In singles, the wind conditions were quite possibly the worst I've faced in my career, but we mentally fought through it and found a way to be competitive. I'm expecting us to continue to raise our game throughout the weekend, and we're excited for another shot tomorrow."
