Aggies Bounce Back in Win Column with Four-Set Victory Over Tigers
Nov 26, 2021 | Volleyball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M volleyball (13-14, 6-11 SEC) opened its final series of the season with a four-set (21-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-23) win over Missouri (5-25, 2-15 SEC) on Friday evening at Reed Arena.
Paving the way was senior duo Mallory Talbert and Camryn Ennis. Talbert recorded a career-high 17 kills to lead the Aggies, while Ennis notched her first double-double of the season, highlighted by 12 kills and a career-best 25 digs. Camille Conner finished with 51 assists, while Talbert and Morgan Christon tallied three blocks apiece.
It was a back-and-forth battle to start, as neither team led the other by more than a point. A 5-1 scoring run carried the Tigers into the media break with a 15-12 advantage, despite a pair of early kills from Lauren Davis. Missouri jumped out in front, 19-15, before a kill by London Austin-Roark on the slide ended the scoring surge by the Tigers. Three-straight points late in the set by the Aggies forced Missouri to call a timeout, but the visitors held on for the 25-21 win.
A&M bounced back in the second frame, charging ahead, 10-5, with a trio of kills from Ennis on the right side. The Aggies continued to drive up the score, embarking on an 8-1 run to lead, 15-6, courtesy of an ace delivered by Taylor Voss. Talbert's sixth kill carried the Maroon & White to their largest advantage, sitting at a 20-9 advantage, before sealing the frame, 25-14 on Ennis' seventh kill.
The Aggies opened the third stanza on a 5-0 run, before Missouri fought back to come within two, sitting at an 8-6 deficit. Five-straight points extended A&M's cushion by seven, leading 15-8, on Voss' second ace of the match. A handful of errors by the Tigers, and a kill from Davis, gave the Aggies the 22-14 advantage closing in on the set. Ennis recorded her 10th kill to push A&M to set point, registering her first double-double of the season, before the Maroon & White grabbed the frame, 25-19.
A&M went on a 3-0 scoring run, which featured a solo stuff by Conner, to lead 6-3 early in the deciding set. Missouri fought its way back to come within one, before a kill from Christon ended the Tiger run. An ace by the Tigers gave Missouri its first lead of the frame, sitting in front, 14-13, but the Aggies quickly regained the lead as Talbert matched her career high in kills with 15. Missouri jumped back in front, but the Maroon & White responded with a 6-1 run to win it, 25-23.

Head coach Laura "Bird" Kuhn
On the team's performance Friday night…
"I liked our response after that first set. I think that they (Missouri) really put their foot on the gas. We knew that we had to execute from the service line in order to get them out of system and manage their pins. Our offense though, that really got going. That is what made them feel more pressure in the second and third sets, and then we were able to finish strong in the fourth. I was really pleased with our composure at the end."
On Camryn Ennis and Mallory Talbert career efforts…
"I loved seeing the performances from both of them, but it really is great for our whole program. This week we focused in on what these matches mean for our seniors and what they mean for our underclassmen as well. Giving back to each other, and that reciprocation is really cool to see. That is the energy that you saw in this match, and that same energy will be what you feel throughout this weekend. You need to feel that energy as a teammate, and they felt it tonight."
Senior middle blocker Mallory Talbert
On the atmosphere surrounding the final two matches…
"We love the 12th Man, and it feels like it has been forever since we had a chance to play in front of them. We are so blessed to have them, and that is what makes Texas A&M so special. We always want to give them a good show and come away every night with a win. We are going to make the most of our opportunity tomorrow for senior night. It is an honor to spend four years here, so we are going to cherish every minute."
Senior outside hitter Camryn Ennis
On the team's mentality this weekend…
"I think we started off pretty slow, but we definitely checked in, which led to an automatic shift from everyone. I think the bench felt it, and everyone on the court felt it. We were all playing for each other, and it was really fun. We started off the week with a talk about how we need to come in and start fresh with each other. We want to make memories this week and work as hard as we can so we can end our careers on a good note."
