HOUSTON, Texas – Former Texas A&M baseball standout A.J. Minter hoisted the Commissioner's Trophy as the Atlanta Braves topped the Houston Astros in the clinching game six of the World Series on Tuesday evening.
Minter became the fourth Aggie to win a World Series title, joining a trio that has combined for nine titles. Chuck Knoblauch leads the group with four, followed by Davey Johnson with three and Wally Moon with two.
The Whitehouse, Texas, native pitched in three World Series games, including earning the win with 2.2 innings of relief work, spelling the injured Charlie Morton in game one. He racked up seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings and added a hold in game as the Braves won game three.
Minter pitched in eight games in the post season, logging a 1-1 record with 18 strikeouts and a 3.00 ERA in 12.0 innings of work. The southpaw pitched in 61 games out of the bullpen during the Braves' AL East pennant drive. Minter registered a 3-6 record with a 3.78 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 52.1 innings. His five-year mark stands at 11-15 with 20 saves, a 3.71 ERA and 211 strikeouts in 179.2 innings.
Knoblauch leads all Aggies with five World Series appearances and four titles. He won a crown with the Twins in 1991 and three consecutive championships with the Yankees from 1998-2000. He also lost a World Series with the Yankees in 2001.
Johnson appeared in four World Series, winning the 1966 edition with the Dodgers and the '70 and '71 titles with the Baltimore Orioles. He lost the '69 World Series as a member of the Orioles. He also won the '86 World Series as the manager of the New York Mets.
Moon won world titles with the Dodgers in 1959 and '65.
Texas A&M and Arkansas were the only two schools to boast a member on the teams that won the Super Bowl (Mike Evans), NBA Finals (Khris Middleton) and World Series in 2021.
Minter lettered three seasons at Texas A&M, posting a 5-0 record with two saves, a 2.01 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 58.1 innings. He was dominant as a set-up man in 2014, posting a 3-0 mark with two saves, a 1.85 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 24.1 innings. Minter was headed to an All-American season in 2015 before being sidelined with an injury. In four starts, he posted a 2-0 mark with a 0.43 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 21.0 innings in that junior campaign.
The Atlanta Braves selected Minter in the second round of the 2015 MLB Draft with the 75th overall pick.
