No. 3 Goldsmith & Makarova Conclude Impressive Run at ITA National Fall Championships
Nov 06, 2021 | Women's Tennis
SAN DIEGO – Texas A&M's No. 3-ranked women's tennis doubles tandem of Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova notched a three-set victory in the ITA National Fall Championship quarterfinals before dropping a semifinal decision Saturday at the Barnes Tennis Center.
The Aggie duo opened the afternoon in southern California with a strong showing against Victoria Flores and Lisa Zaar of Pepperdine. Goldsmith and Makarova dropped the first set in a narrow 6-4 affair before an equally hard fought 6-4 victory in the second frame forced a decisive third-set tiebreaker. A&M ultimately came away with the win against the Waves, finalizing the 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(3) score with a superfluous effort in the breaker.
A&M entered its second match of the day against Tatsiana Sasnouskaya and Yuliia Starodubtseva of Old Dominion, in which the Monarchs secured a difficult three-set win. The Maroon & White held set point up 6-5 in the first set, but ultimately dropped a 7-6(4) frame. After blitzing through the second 6-1, the third-set tiebreaker favored the Monarchs by a narrow 10-7 margin.
At the ITA National Fall Championships, the No. 3-ranked Aggies finished with a 3-1 effort. Goldsmith and Makarova conclude their fall campaign with an impressive 8-3 record on their fall ledger with one ranked win to this point. Both players will return to action in January of 2022 at the start of regular season play.

On Goldsmith and Makarova's performance Thursday…
"We had a great tournament. Unfortunately, we just missed out on a shot at the finals tomorrow. We had a 4-1 lead in the first set that we let slip away and also had a set point at 6-5 that we couldn't quite get. The good news is that Tatiana and Jayci are playing the best tennis of their collegiate careers right now, and that really bodes well for our team as we head towards the spring season."
