Aggies Edged by Rebels, 2-1, in Series Opener
Apr 16, 2021 | Softball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to open the series against the Ole Miss Rebels on Friday evening at Davis Diamond.
The Rebels took the early lead after plating a run in the top of the second on a RBI single by Mikayla Allee. The Maroon & White answered back in the bottom of the sixth and tied things up on an RBI infield single by Kelly Martinez. The Aggies kept the Rebels quiet at the plate, until the seventh when they ran into a bit of trouble. The Rebels took advantage of a fielding mishap and a couple free bags to load the bases, before Abbey Latham delivered the final blow, an RBI infield single, to take the outright lead.
In the circle, Aggie starter Makinzy Herzog (10-3) was saddled with the loss. Herzog tossed the complete 7.0 frames, yielding two runs, one earned, on five hits while fanning four and walking five. The Missouri City, Texas, native held the Rebel's offense to just 3-for-14 with runners on and 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position. The two hits given up with runners in scoring position, ended up being key decisive RBI hits.
Offensively, seven Aggies recorded a hit on the day. Martinez led the way going 1-for-3, while bringing across the Aggies lone run of the game in the sixth.
The Aggies dropped to 27-12 on the season and 5-8 in conference play, while the Rebels improve to 27-14 on the season and 9-7 in league play.

WHAT THEY SAID
Head Coach Jo Evans
Opening Statement…
"Disappointing loss for us. I thought (Makinzy) Herzog was just terrific on the mound and just gave us a chance to win a ballgame. They put a couple of hits there together to score the first run. We scramble back in the sixth to score a run and, you know, put ourselves in a really tough bind when we kicked that very first play of the seventh inning, that's an out. Hit somebody, walk somebody, but you know Herzog got herself out of that inning, that's an unearned run right there and disappointing, but you know, I thought we competed. I thought it was, overall, aside from the seventh inning, a really well-played game. I thought their pitcher did a nice job. She kept our hitters off balance. She was throwing the changeup for a strike as she went on. Tip your hat to her. I thought she had a good night."
