Aggies Conclude Spring with Maroon & White Game
Apr 24, 2021 | Football
Jimbo Fisher and the football team concluded spring practice on Saturday with the annual Maroon & White Game on a sun-splashed afternoon inside Kyle Field.
Under near perfect conditions and in front of a solid showing by the 12th Man, the Maroon team posted two fourth-quarter scores en route to a 23-6 victory over the White team.
Zach Calzada (19-for-40, 253 yards, TD) and Haynes King (16-for-31, 211 yards, TD) saw a bulk of the action under center. Top receivers were Ainias Smith (5 catches, 115 yards, TD), Hez Jones (5-82), Jalen Preston (6-63), Devin Price (4-62) and Chase Lane (6-49).
The specialists had a good day, connecting on five field goals--Caden Davis hitting three (51, 55 and 31) and Seth Small cashing in a pair (31 and 37).
Postgame Quotes: Jimbo Fisher
Opening statement … We got through spring. We saw some guys in different positions, we got a lot of good work in. We’ll evaluate the film and see, and then we’ll start putting pieces in place to get ready for fall camp. We have a lot of work to do on both sides of the ball, we know that coming out of spring. Always have, always will. What we do between now and camp, getting in shape, becoming masters of our craft, studying film, those types of things. They are going to have to do a lot of work on their own. They’re going to have a lot of time on their own. We are looking to have good pieces to be a good football team. We made a lot of development in a lot of key areas, but we still have work to do in all areas.
On getting the freshmen/younger guys game-like experience …. The new guys gets out there and start to get a feel. [Spring game] is the closest things you can get to the simulation of the nerves you’re going to get in a real game, and it’s still going to be more than that. That’s part of growing up and not letting the adrenaline and things get to you and be able to keep your composure to be able to execute. And any time you can put guys in that situation, you need to.
On replacing Buddy Johnson … Tarian Lee has played great all spring, Edgerrin Cooper, all of those guys have done a really nice job. They are the next generation of guys that have to step in and that’s what they’re here for and I think they did a really nice job. I think we have good talent there, we just have to get them to mater everything that they’re doing, but you can see the ability they have.
Postgame Quotes: Kenyon Green
On what he learned and what the team needs to work on…. “We are not perfect right now, but we need to work on our technique. For next season, we need to be working out, getting stronger and create a bond.”
On how hard it has been to gain chemistry this spring with so many injuries to the offensive line… “I feel like we are doing OK. We can get better at that. We just have to work, that is the main thing. We just need to put our head down during the summer time and get to work.”
Postgame Quotes: Demani Richardson
On how the defense played today… “The defense played well today. We had some guys missing today, but the backups stepped up and did their part. We had a few busted coverages, but we did pretty well.”
On how the secondary handled the passing attack… “It was good. Everyone knows that our defensive line is really good and really talented. We were missing a couple of guys, but it was good for us. We always need work on communicating, splits and our technically. We have to just work on getting better.”
