Makarova and Goldsmith Receive ITA All-America Laurels
Jun 07, 2021 | Women's Tennis
TEMPE, Ariz. – Texas A&M women's tennis senior Tatiana Makarova was named an ITA All-American in singles and doubles, while junior Jayci Goldsmith received an All-America designation in doubles, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Monday.
"This is quite an honor for both Jayci and Tatiana," head coach Mark Weaver said. "It is incredible that Tatiana was able to achieve All-America status in singles, and that Tatiana and Jayci were both able to receive an All-America designation for their accomplishments in doubles as well. We are looking forward to both of them returning next season and helping to lead our program alongside Katya [Townsend] and Renee [McBryde], as we have a very young and talented team coming in."
After reaching the NCAA Individual Championships Doubles Quarterfinals earlier last month, Makarova and Goldsmith earned an automatic designation as an ITA All-America doubles tandem. The pair finished the season with a 20-12 overall doubles record, including a stellar 7-1 slate in tournament action that catapulted them into the No. 15 final ranking, released by the ITA earlier this month. A&M's headline duo consistently showed out against ranked opponents, recording eight ranked wins with two victories in the top-10. Their signature win came in the NCAA Individual Championships Round of 16, where they defeated No. 5 Jaeda Daniel and Adriana Reami of NC State in straight sets to warrant their All-America designation. Makarova and Goldsmith become the second ITA doubles All-American pairing in Texas A&M program history, with Rachel Pierson and Rutuja Bhosale earning the same title in 2017.
Following her No. 19 final ranking in the Oracle ITA Singles Poll last week, Makarova was awarded ITA Singles All-America status after posting a 26-7 overall record in the 2020-21 season. Her 26 victories on the year paced A&M's roster, while her eight ranked wins stands as the most in a season by an Aggie since Pierson finished with 11 in 2017. The Moscow, Russia, native Makarova also earned a spot on the All-SEC First Team after demolishing her opponents in league play, logging a perfect 10-0 record during the conference regular season. She becomes Texas A&M's 10th singles All-American and stands as the ninth Aggie to earn ITA All-America designation. In addition, Makarova is only the second player in program history to receive All-America honors in both singles and doubles in the same season, with Pierson accomplishing the same feat in 2017.
For Weaver, Makarova and Goldsmith become the eighth and ninth ITA All-Americans that he has coached since joining Texas A&M as a volunteer assistant in 2000. As a head coach, Weaver is responsible for coaching both of A&M's All-American doubles pairings and has guided two singles athletes to All-America laurels.
