ITA All-American Championships End for Men’s Tennis

The Texas A&M men's tennis program run at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships came to an end, Friday night at the Case Tennis Center.

TULSA, Okla. – The Texas A&M men's tennis program run at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships came to an end, Friday night at the Case Tennis Center.

"As always, this tournament was a very tough one with the best players in the country," head coach Steve Denton said. "We had some solid results from a few of the guys but we need more consistent play from everyone. We are at the half way point of the fall and we really need to improve in some areas as individuals and collectively as a team, in order to finish the fall strong."

No. 25 Trey Hilderbrand-Noah Schachter fell to Tanapatt Nirundorn-Togan Tokac (Florida), 3-6, 6-7 (7-4). Despite the quarterfinals loss in the main draw, the Aggie duo registered two wins, including one ranked win against No. 21 Max Westphal-Theo Winegar (Columbia), 7(7)-6(2), 7(7)-6(5).

"The doubles was solid today, I know Trey and Noah had high hopes here this week, but there are razor thin margins in the doubles and the big points didn't fall our way today," Denton said. "Great news is we have another opportunity to compete next week at our regionals in Waco."

Competing in the singles main draw consolation bracket, No. 50 Hilderbrand fell to No. 82 Shunsuke Mitsubishi (Tennessee), 3-6, 4-6, in the round of 16.

Prior to competing in the main draw, Hilderbrand opened singles play in the qualifying draw defeating Baptiste Anselmo (Oklahoma), 7-5, 6-2. Hilderbrand followed by beating Samir Banerjee (Stanford), 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 before defeating Pranav Kumar (SMU), 6-3, 6-4.
