Post Meet Quotes
Head coach Jay Holmes on the overall meet and the first event …
This meet is always fun for us. It's great to have these teams come in and compete against us. There are some really good teams here and we are thankful to them for coming in, because really raises the level of competition. To start the night was the 200 freestyle relay, and everything was great until that last leg. [Baylor Nelson] is always on point for us, but he missed his turn and that really cost us. All four guys on that relay had a good race and it's just hard to close out when that happens.
On the 500 free …
[William] Coakley went a best time in the 500 free. He has really been working to get under 4:20 and he was 0.12 away today. It was a great swim for him, but it's amazing what a difference 12-hundreths of a second can do.
On a successful 200 IM …
The 200 IM is just a really good event for us. We had six guys in the top eight and finished 1-2-3-4. That event is just a strength of our team. Baylor [Nelson] showed up there, he won the event with the second-fastest performance all-time for us. He just missed the A-cut, but that will be a time that gets him invited to NCAA [Championships] and that's always nice to get out of the way.
On the 50 free competition …
It has probably been three or four years since our 50 free has shown up at this meet, and Jason [Calanog] and I were unsure how we would stack up heading into this meet. Kraig Bray had really good swims. Ethan [Gogulski] and Connor Foote stepped up and had some good swims. It shows promise for us and shows us that when we do put our 200 freestyle relay together, we are going to be pretty good at that.
On breaking a school record in the 400 medley relay …
We thought we should have broken our 400 medley relay school record in the last two years and we just hadn't done it. Ethan [Gogulski] got it started and nearly hit his best time. The big leg for us was Andres [Puente] going 50 [in the breaststroke], there are so few people in the NCAA that can do that. That was just a huge swim. We got the A cut, so that relay is qualified for NCAAs and broke our school record. It was a great end to the first day.
On the days of competition ahead …
We have two more days and have a lot more coming at us. There are a lot of good teams whose strengths we are going to be going against tomorrow. Score-wise, we are ahead right now, but it doesn't mean a whole lot since we are only a third of the way through this. Should be a lot of fun racing everyone tomorrow.
