Krajicek Set for French Open Doubles Final
Jun 03, 2022 | Men's Tennis
PARIS – Texas A&M men's tennis former student Austin Krajicek prepares for the first Grand Slam doubles final of his professional career on Saturday, as the Aggie legend teams up with Ivan Dodig of Croatia against 12th-seeded Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands.
First serve in the 2022 French Open men's doubles final from Stade Roland Garros is slated for 8 a.m. (CT). The match is set for broadcast to a national television audience via NBC and Peacock.
"I am so proud and excited for Austin," head coach Steve Denton said. "This is a well-deserved opportunity. He has been such a great Aggie, he was even inducted into the Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021. Throughout his professional career, he has continued to show great work ethic. Austin was our first true high-level recruiting prospect here, and he has continued to make Aggies proud all over the world. Austin is a great ambassador for Texas A&M and a great ambassador for American tennis, mainly due to the way he continues to fight and get better at every opportunity. I couldn't be more thrilled to see him compete at this level. This is the culmination of a lot of hard work."
Krajicek built one of the most impressive resumes in program history during his four-year stint in the Brazos Valley, garnering A&M's only NCAA doubles national championship alongside Jeff Dadamo in the 2011 season. Krajicek, a native of Tampa, Florida, was a two-time Big 12 Player of the Year and secured the most doubles victories in program history with 112.
Krajicek and Dodig advanced to the semifinals of the main draw with four wins in the top half of the bracket, highlighted by a thrilling three-set victory over top-seeded Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury. In the semifinals, Krajicek and Dodig overcame a 4-6 first set loss to fourth-seeded Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos to claim a 4-6, 7-6(1), 7-5 victory en route to the tournament final.
Arevalo and Rojer claimed a pair of seeded victories in the process of reaching the final, most recently defeating 16th-seeded Rohan Bopanna and Matwe Middelkoop in three sets during the tournament semifinals.
Dodig and Rojer are each seeking their third Grand Slam doubles title, while Middelkoop and Krajicek look to garner their first.
