Coming off another productive season in Aggieland, head coach Steve Denton and the Texas A&M men’s tennis program aims to return to its historic standard among the best in the SEC.

No. 23 Texas A&M looks to make waves within the conference with a deep roster filled with a variety of talent and experience.

2021-22 in Review

The Maroon & White started the year ranked No. 21 in the ITA preseason ranking, while being picked to finish sixth in the SEC. The Aggies had a 22-14 overall record, going 15-9 in the regular season and 7-5 in the SEC play with big victories over Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Georgia, Alabama, LSU, and Ole Miss. After concluding their league slate, the Aggies fell to Arkansas in the second round of the SEC Championship.

At the NCAA Championship, the Maroon & White toppled Tulsa (4-1) before bowing out to No. 3 Baylor (4-2) in the second round.

In the individual NCAA Championships, Noah Schachter and Kenner Taylor both received a bid in the doubles competition but fell short in the opening round against Stanford’s Arthur Fery and Alexandre Rotsaert. Schachter also participated in the singles main draw but was defeated by No. 6 August Holmgren of San Diego in the round of 64.

“Last year was a bit of a rebuilding year,” Denton said. “We lost quite a few starters from our ’21 NCAA quarterfinal NCAA team to the pros and graduation. Regardless, it was a very enjoyable group that continued to improve throughout the season and almost upset Baylor in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Waco last May.”

Fall Recap

The Maroon & White fought hard this autumn competing in many Intercollegiate Tennis Association tournaments, including the All-American Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Facing off with some of the best in the country, Trey Hilderbrand and Schachter finished in the quarterfinals of the main draw, while Hilderbrand advanced to the round of 16 in the singles main draw.

At the ITA Texas Regional in Waco, the Aggies’ doubles pairings of Schachter/Hilderbrand and Stefan Storch/Matthis Ross marched to the quarterfinals. Mathis Bondaz/Luke Casper and JC Roddick/Kenner Taylor advanced to the quarterfinals in the doubles consolation bracket.

Pierce Rollins reached the finals but fell in the last match of the tournament, 6-2, 6-2. Rollins traveled to San Diego for the ITA National Championships after his performance during the Texas ITA Regional.

Leading into the spring semester, Hilderbrand is slotted No. 43 in the ITA preseason ranking, Pierce Rollins right behind at No. 44, Raphael Perot at No. 88, and Roddick at No. 92. In men’s doubles, Hilderbrand and Schachter are posted at No. 33.

“With the whole team back and the additional line up players from UCF, I see a lot of potential for this team to return to national prominence,” Denton said. “I like what I see so far and if we continue to put our heads down and work hard, this team can do some very special things this spring.”
