No. 2 A&M Concludes Regular Season with Perfect SEC Record

After becoming back-to-back regular season champions, the No. 2 Texas A&M women's tennis team secured its second consecutive undefeated conference regular season, finishing 13-0 in league play with a 4-1 win over No. 32 Vanderbilt Sunday at the Currey Tennis Center.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After becoming back-to-back regular season champions, the No. 2 Texas A&M women's tennis team secured its second consecutive undefeated conference regular season, finishing 13-0 in league play with a 4-1 win over No. 32 Vanderbilt Sunday at the Currey Tennis Center.
 
The Aggies (25-1, 13-0 SEC) opened the match claiming a tightly contested doubles point. No. 69 Mary Stoiana/Mia Kupres continued their perfect unbeaten run as a duo, topping No. 78 Célia-Belle Mohr/Marcella Cruz, 6-1. Vanderbilt (14-10, 6-7 SEC) responded on court 3, leaving court 1 to decide doubles. No. 22 Jayci Goldsmith/Salma Ewing answered the call in a thrilling tiebreaker over Holly Staff/Anna Ross (7-6(2)), which gave A&M the point.
 
No. 119 Goldsmith carried her doubles match momentum into singles, quickly doubling the lead versus Anessa Lee on court 3 (7-5, 6-1). Jeanette Mireles secured her second win of the road trip, as she dominated Amy Stevens on court 5 (6-2, 6-4). The Commodores struck back winning on court 6, but No. 2 Stoiana laid any doubt to rest, outlasting No. 34 Mohr on court 1 (7-5, 6-4) to clinch the match, 4-1. No. 53 Kupres was leading in her match over No. 85 Bridget Stammel (1-6, 6-3, 3-2), while No. 112 Daria Smetannikov was just entering her third set in a battle with Holly Staff (6-2, 5-7) before the match was clinched, leaving their matches unfinished.

The Aggies travel the Fayetteville, Arkansas and enter the SEC Tournament as the No. 1 seed, earning a double-bye. The team will take the court Friday, April 21, at 12 p.m. and face the winner of Alabama/Vanderbilt in the quarterfinals.
