Swimming & Diving Visits Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park
Jan 16, 2023 | Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving
Earlier this month, the Texas A&M men's and women's swimming & diving teams took advantage of an opportunity to learn more about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while on the road in Atlanta.
"We as a staff, are always looking for opportunities to bring education on the road with us," men's associate head coach Jason Calanog said. "Atlanta, being the birthplace of one of the most influential historical figures in American history, was the perfect enhancement for our student-athletes college experience. They were able to see firsthand the power one person can have in creating change."
The teams spent the day learning more about Dr. King's story, visiting the home he was born in and spent the first 12 years of his life in, living with his grandparents, parents, siblings, other family members and borders. Down the street, they had the opportunity to listen to some of Dr. King's sermons and speeches at Ebeneezer Baptist Church, where he, his father and his grandfather all served as pastors.
"I learned that Martin Luther King Jr. was born in his house instead of a hospital because his parents wanted him to be born in a place that wasn't segregated. I thought it was nice that they wanted to bring him into a world that wasn't divided by color," junior Sarah Szklaruk Traipe said after visiting the landmark.
The Aggies saw Dr. King and Mrs. Coretta Scott King's crypt. They also had the chance to visit Fire Station No. 6, one of the first desegregated fire houses in the South, as well as the King Center, which continues to spread the nonviolent ministry through educational and inspirational materials including audio, video and the preserved writings of Dr. King.
"I learned that Martin Luther King Jr. fought using his words and beliefs, having faith in the people that supported him to fight for what was right and for the people," said junior David Oderinde.
As we honor and remember Dr. King's life, work and impact on the world around his birthday, we are reminded of and encouraged to carry on his unwavering fight for justice, peace and equality.
