NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 18 Texas A&M men's basketball team fell 82-62 to the No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC Tournament championship game on Sunday at the Bridgestone Arena.
The Aggies, who were making their second straight appearance in the title game, fell to 25-9 overall and now await their opponent and destination for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Sophomore guard Wade Taylor IV, from Dallas, Texas, was named to the all-tournament team on the strength of an 18.7 scoring average and 10 assists over the Aggies' three games in Nashville.
The long and athletic Crimson Tide, who also won the SEC regular season crown, were in control of the game from the opening tip, but the resilient Aggies trimmed the deficit to eight points at the 10:50 mark of the second. But a flurry of points from the Tide squashed any hope of an Aggie upset as the deficit went from eight points to as many as 25 over the next six minutes.
Graduate guard Dexter Dennis led the Aggies with 14 points and also grabbed five rebounds, while Taylor IV scored 13 and Tyrece Radford added 12. Henry Coleman III posted a game-high nine rebounds, including eight offensive boards. Freshman Solomon Washington was the Aggies' top scorer off the bench with six points and he also pulled down four rebounds.
The Crimson Tide took an 11-point advantage into halftime as they hit six 3-pointers and limited the Aggies to just 20.7 shooting from the field. Alabama rolled to a 16-7 advantage by the first media timeout and led by as many as 16 before the Aggies closed the gap to 34-23 at the break. Dennis led the Aggies' scoring in the first half with six points and the team got an energy boost from Washington who hit 4-of-4 free throws and pulled down a couple of boards off the bench.
