TOURNAMENT PREVIEW: Aggie Invitational

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 14 Texas A&M men's golf team defends its home turf in the regular-season finale Monday and Tuesday when it hosts the Aggie Invitational at the par-72, 7,227-yard Traditions Club.

The 13-team field, includes seven teams from the Lone Star State, including Texas A&M, Baylor, TCU, North Texas, Houston, Sam Houston and UTSA. LSU joins the Aggies as the two SEC teams in the tournament.

The event is free and open to the public.

The Aggies enter the fray slotted No. 14 in the Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches Poll and No. 15 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Collegiate Ranking presented by StrackaLine and the Golfstat Ranking. The Maroon & White have four victories on the 2022-23 campaign, including the Badger Invitational, the Blessings Collegiate Invitational, the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate and the Louisiana Classics.

Texas A&M fields a formidable lineup for the event including Jaime Montojo, William Paysse, Daniel Rodrigues, Vishnu Sadagopan and Phichaksn Maichon. Michael Heidelbaugh, Dallas Hankamer, Evan Myers, Junmin "Jimmy" Lee and Matthew Denton join the field as an individuals.

The Maroon & White are the two-time defending Aggie Invitational champions and have added wins in 2010, '11 and'14. Recent graduate Walker Lee is the only two-time individual medalist at the tournament, with wins in 2018 and '22. Bennett won the Aggie Invitational in 2021. Jordan Russell (2010) and Chandler Phillips (2018) also claimed the crown in 2018.

The 54-hole tournament features two rounds on Monday followed by Tuesday's final 18 holes. Play commences with tee times between 7:30-9:30 a.m. both days.

Earned SEC Freshman of the Week twice - after an 18th place finish at the Blessings Collegiate invitational and an 8^th place finish at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate.

William Paysse – Senior – Belton, Texas

Earned All-SEC First Team and Freshman All-SEC, as well as PING All-America Honorable Mention and GCAA National All-Freshman in 2020.
Owns a 71.53 stroke average over four tournaments in 2022-23, including earning co-medalist honors at the Badger Invitational.
Played in 11 tournaments in 2021-22, registering a 72.09 stroke average and seven top-25 finishes.
Last time out – finished 42^nd at the Valspar Collegiate (2-over 215).

Daniel Rodrigues– Junior – Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal

SEC Golfer of the Week on Oct. 14 following his win at the Blessings Intercollegiate (11-under 205).
Owns a 71.23 stroke average in 2022-23, including -0.31 vs. par over 26 rounds.
Registered a 72.23 stroke average in 10 tournaments in 2021-22, including top 10 finishes at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate (t-4th) and the Louisiana Classics (t-6th).
Last time out – tied for 20^th at the Valspar Collegiate (3-over 210).

Vishnu Sadagopan – Sophomore – Pearland, Texas

Boasts a 70.55 stroke average in five tournaments in 2022-23, recording top-10 finishes at the Badger Invitational (t-7^th) and the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate (t-5^th).
Participated in the 2022 United States Amateur Championship.
Played in three events in 2021-22, placing 13^th at the Washington County Invitational in Hartford, Wisconsin.
Last time out – placed 26^th at the Valspar Collegiate, (2-under 211), including a career-best 7-under 64 for the last round.

Phichaksn Maichon – Sophomore – Bangkok, Thailand

Owns a 70.95 stroke average in 21 rounds in 2022-23, posting six sub-70 rounds.
Competed in 10 tournaments as a freshman in 2021-22, registering a 73.37 stoke average.
Held the day two lead at the 2022 SEC Championships.
Earned SEC Player of the Week once in 2022-23.
Last time out – won the Bearkat Invitational with a career-best 11-under 205 at Walden on Lake Conroe.

COURSE
The Traditions Club is not just another golf course. The terrain is unexpected, but a welcome surprise. Turkey Creek together with the rolling hills, make it a test from the tee box – so pick your tee carefully. This 7,227-yard championship course designed by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II features stately hardwoods, many natural creeks and wetlands, and striking vistas of Kyle Field and the University skyline.

The generous fairways offer some relief, but the strategically placed bunkers let you know where the Nicklaus' intended your ball to land. Like many other Nicklaus Designs, Traditions provides golfers with a true championship golf experience. It's golf the way it was intended to be played – a fair test of skill that is sure to challenge and delight all who play it.
