
Lamkin, Wansing Among Elite Aggie SEC Tournament Pitching Performances

Troy Wansing and Justin Lamkin have been lights out in their SEC Tournament debut. The left-handers crafted the latest in a long line of spectacular mound performances by the Maroon & White at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. Their two wins marked the first two nine-inning, one-hit shutouts in SEC Tournament history. 12thMan.com looks back at the Aggies’ best outings at the SEC Tournament.

2013
Daniel Mengden vs. Florida – 9.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 11 K
On the heels of his first career complete-game the prior week, Mengden (8-3) allowed just one earned run on five hits and one walk over 9.0 innings to earn his fourth consecutive win. The sophomore cruised through the latter part of the game, retiring the last 13 batters he faced, including eight strikeouts.
Parker Ray vs. No. 1 Vanderbilt – 8.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K
In just his fifth career start, Ray (1-1) earned his first win of the season as he stymied Vanderbilt hitters over a career-long 8.0 innings. He scattered three hits and three walks while striking out three. Ray walked the first batter of the ninth, but A.J. Minter fanned a batter and Jason Jester induced a pair of groundouts to complete the shutout. He outpitched future MLB first-rounder Walker Buehler to nail the win.
2015
Matt Kent vs. No. 9 Vanderbilt – 9.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K
Kent (7-1) cruised through 9.0 fames allowing just six baserunners on four hits, one walk and one hit batsman. The southpaw struck out six and held the Commodores to 0-for-7 batting with runners in scoring position. It marked the first complete-game of the year for an Aggie pitcher. He outdueled future MLB first-round, eighth overall, draft pick Carson Fulmer in the win.
2016
Brigham Hill vs. No. 9 South Carolina – 7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 K
For the second time in 13 days, Hill baffled South Carolina hitters as he led the Aggies to a 4-1 win over the No. 9 Gamecocks. He yielded just one unearned run on five hits and three walks while striking out eight in 7.0 innings to improve to 8-1 on the season. Hill, who was overlooked for All-SEC pitching honors, lowered his ERA to 1.88 on the year.
2018
Kaylor Chafin & Nolan Hoffman vs. Vanderbilt – 6.0 IP, 6 H 1 R, 1 BB, 5K; 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Texas A&M’s combo of Chafin (5-0) and Hoffman (13) bewildered the Vanderbilt offense in the Aggies’ 3-1 opening round win. Chafin was stellar in a rare start, weaving 6.0 innings, allowing one run on six hits and one walk while striking out five. Hoffman worked the final 3.0 shutout innings, allowing a pair of hits while string out a three on his way to the save.
Asa Lacy & Cason Sherrod vs. No. 8 Georgia – 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K; 3.0 IP 0 H, 1 BB 5 K
Lacy and Sherrod combined on a three-hitter as the Aggies shut out No. 9 Georgia, 7-0, in the second round of the SEC Tournament. Lacy (3-1) was dominant in his second career start, scattering three hits and three walks while logging a then career-high eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Sherrod worked the final three frames, retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced on the way to his first save of the season. The pair combined for 13 strikeouts and limited the Bulldogs to three total bases, their season low.
John Doxakis vs. No. 21 Auburn – 7.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 10 K
Doxakis (7-5) took a no-hitter into the eighth inning as the Aggies topped No. 21 Auburn, 4-2. He faced two over the minimum through the first seven innings, before Jay Estes, the first batter in the eighth, reached on an infield single. Doxakis finished the day with 7.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits and two hit batsmen while striking out 10. He outpitched future No. 1 overall pick Casey Mize in the win.
2019
Chris Weber vs. No. 6 Georgia – 7.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K
The Aggies were unable to take advantage of a gem by Weber who pitched 7.1 innings before allowing a hit in the loss to No. 6 Georgia. It marked the longest any pitcher has ever worked in the SEC Tournament before allowing their first hit, until the next day. The southpaw was relieved on the mound immediately after giving up the initial hit. His final line in the no-decision was 7.1 scoreless innings, scattering one hit and two walks while striking out four.
John Doxakis vs. No. 21 Ole Miss – 8.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 10 K
The Aggies were eliminated from the 2019 SEC Tournament in a 1-0 loss to No. 21 Ole Miss despite a historic pitching performance from Doxakis. The southpaw weaved the longest no-hit performance in SEC Tournament history with his 8.0 innings of work. He hit one batter and walked four, but he recorded 10 strikeouts and induced a pair of double plays before exiting a 0-0 contest. Doxakis worked a combined 15.1 innings of two-hit ball, allowing one run with four walks and 20 strikeouts in two back-to-back Hoover starts.
2022
Micah Dallas and Joseph Menefee vs. Florida – 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K; 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Dallas and Menefee dazzled on the mound as the Aggies thumped the Gators 10-0 in a seven-inning run-rule outing. Dallas (5-3) scattered one hit and one walk while striking out seven in 5.0 innings to earn the win. Menefee, who entered the game with the Aggies up by three runs after five innings, earned his first save of the season. He struck out four of the six batters he faced in 2.0 innings.

2023
Troy Wansing vs. No. 13 Tennessee – 8.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K
Wansing muted Tennessee’s vaunted bats for 8.0 innings as the Aggies beat the Volunteers 3-0. The southpaw retired 24 of the 25 batters he faced, including the first 16. Tennessee’s lone hit came with a one-out single in the sixth. His previous career-long was 6.0 innings on two occasions in 2023. Evan Aschenbeck closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth as the Volunteers sent only 28 batters to the plate.
Justin Lamkin vs South Carolina - 7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 9 K
Lamkin registered career highs with 7.0 innings pitched and nine strikeouts to earn the victory. He scattered one hit and three walks as he did not allow a runner to reach scoring position. South Carolina’s lone hit was leadoff single in the fifth inning. Lamkin’s outing was the longest for a freshman in Hoover since Chris Weber’s 2019 outing.
