RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Texas A&M golfer Blanca Fernández García-Poggio birdied three of her last four holes to bring the Aggies within one stroke of the lead after the first round of the Puerto Rico Classic at the Grand Reserve Golf Club on Sunday.
"We competed really well out there today," head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "This was our first 18-hole round of competition this semester, and in a lot of ways it felt like it. However, we fought and got to learn a lot about this course for round two. Blanca's last few holes were huge for us to hold our position heading into tomorrow and for her confidence moving forward."
The Aggies shot 4-under 284 as a team and were one stroke back of No. 11 LSU after round one. Rounding out the top five on the team leaderboard was Oklahoma State (-2), No. 9 Ole Miss (+2) and Georgia Southern (+2). The field will tee off at 6:30 a.m. Monday morning with a shotgun start for the second 18.
Blanca Fernández García-Poggio was tied for fifth after 18 holes at 3-under 69. The graduate student was even par with four holes remaining, but rattled off birds on Nos. 2, 4 and 5 to propel her into the top five.
Adela Cernousek started the day on fire, recording birdies on the first two holes. She would maintain that position throughout the day, finishing tied for seventh heading into day two at 2-under 70. The No. 2 amateur in the world, Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio, turned in a steady 1-under 71 and tied for 12th.
Jennie Park (+2) and Sky Sudberry (+4) rounded out the starting lineup tied for 46th and 59th, respectively. Zoe Slaughter (+5) and Mia Nixon (+10) competed as individuals in the field. Slaughter tied for 65th and Nixon held a share of 85th.
