SUNSET, S.C. – The No. 19 Texas A&M women's golf team was in third after the second round of the Clemson Invitational at The Reserve at Lake Keowee on Saturday and were sparked by Adela Cernousek turning in a 5-under 67.
"We are right in there heading into tomorrow," head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "Adela got off to a blazing start. It was nice to see Adela and Cata have great days. We are so close to having a big one and we will have an opportunity tomorrow."
Texas A&M fired a 6-under 282 on day two and the Aggies were six strokes back of Vanderbilt heading into the final round. Clemson (-10) was also ahead of A&M, while Ohio State (-6) and LSU (-5) were behind the Maroon & White to complete the top five.
Cernousek was in sole possession of third after 36 holes. The junior was 6-under 138 at the conclusion of Saturday and was five strokes back of LSU's Ingrid Lingblad (-11) for first. The Antibes, France, native began the day with a birdie and eagle on Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. She followed that up with two more birdies on 4 and 5, completing a masterful 31 on the front nine. The back nine was even-par golf for Cernousek.
Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio, the No. 6 amateur in the world, got the better of the course as well, shooting a 3-under 69. The freshman was even at the turn, but birdied Nos. 11, 17 and 18 to give the Aggies another below-par round. The Spainard was tied for 15th.
Blanca Fernández García-Poggio went even on the day and tied for 27th. Jennie Park was the final counting score for A&M, recording a 2-over 74 and tied for 57th. Zoe Slaughter rounded out the lineup tied for 37th after shooting 5-over 77.
