Stephenson Recognized Among Nation’s Best Assistant Coaches

The Texas A&M associate head coach Phil Stephenson was named one of the top 12 Division I assistants in the nation for 2023 by College Soccer News.

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M associate head coach Phil Stephenson was named one of the top 12 Division I assistants in the nation for 2023 by College Soccer News.
 
Stephenson was cited for being key in player development, team tactics, mentoring and the development of a winning culture at Texas A&M.
 
Heading into his 26th season on staff, Stephenson has helped build the Aggie program into one of the elite sides in the nation. During his first 25 seasons, Texas A&M has claimed nine conference regular-season crowns and seven league tournament titles. The Aggies have made it to the NCAA Championship 24 of his 25 seasons on staff, earned 15 Sweet Sixteen appearances, made it to the Elite Eight on seven occasions and played in the 2014 College Cup.
 
Stephenson has regularly been honored nationally for his efforts, including earning United Soccer Coaches Southeast Region Staff of the Year in 2020-21 and National Soccer Coaches Association of America South Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2014. Scholastic Coach & Athletic Director Magazine named Stephenson the AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2003.
 
The Maroon & White wrapped up the 30th winning season in 31 years of the program in 2023. The Aggies posted a 10-8-4 record, playing in their 28th NCAA Tournament in the last 29 years and advancing to the second round for the 24th time in the last 26 years – a mark eclipsed only by North Carolina.
