BELLEAIR, Fla. – The No. 16 Texas A&M women's golf team was paced by Zoe Slaughter's 3-under 67 on the par-70 Pelican Golf Club on Saturday's second round of the 2024 SEC Championships.
"We got off to a blazing start and even had the lead going into the turn," head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "The wind picked up on the back and won the day, but I am really thankful for that start because it gave us a good cushion coming in. We came out fighting and that's what you need to do out here. I want us to come out swinging tomorrow and be able to make match play with one of the top seeds."
Slaughter's 67 was the second-lowest score by an individual on the day. It led to a 1-over 281 for the Aggies as a team, tied for the lowest round by a school in round two. The Maroon & White stood in second place on the team leaderboard after 36 holes behind No. 2 South Carolina (-3). The squad was 18 shots ahead of eighth place heading into the final round, which will be the cut after 54 holes before match play.
Slaughter did all of her damage on the front nine, where she was 3-under at the turn. The senior knocked down four birdies thru nine holes. Slaughter was tied for 16th after Saturday's play. Adela Cernousek turned in an even-par day and was 1-under 139 after two rounds. The junior was tied for eighth going into the final round of stroke play.
Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio shot a 3-over 73 but was still tied for eighth ahead of round three. The freshman and Cernousek were both four shots back of Mississippi State's Julia Lopez Ramirez (-5) for the individual lead.
Blanca Fernández García-Poggio went 1-over 71 in round two and tied for 16th but capped off the day with a birdie on 18, which was playing as the toughest hole on the course. The par-four 18th hole was scoring 0.70 strokes above par on Saturday and only four golfers recorded birdies on the last hole on the course. Jennie Park rounded out the lineup tied for 49th.
The Aggies will once again tee off at 7 a.m. to begin the third and final round of stroke play. Live stats for the event can be found at golfstat.com.
