OXFORD – Behind a career performance from Shane Sdao, the No. 2 Texas A&M baseball team blanked Ole Miss 6-0 in the series finale Sunday evening from Swayze Field.
Â
The shutout marked the ninth of the year for the Aggies (42-10, 17-10), which ties the 1977 and 2016 squads for the third most in program history.
Â
In his second start of the season, Sdao tossed a career-high seven scoreless innings of three hit baseball en route to his fourth win of the year. The sophomore also matched his career-high for strikeouts with six and retired the final 10 Rebels he faced. Josh Stewart and Evan Aschenbeck followed the left-hander with scoreless frames to cap off the shutout. The trio combined to retire the final 16 Ole Miss batters in the win.
Â
Caden Sorrell and Travis Chestnut recorded the lone multi-hit performances on the night for the Maroon & White, each finishing 2-for-4 at the dish. The duo also combined to score three of the six runs in the win.
Â
The Aggies jumped in front in the third behind a solo homer to right center off the bat of Sorrell. The long ball marked the seventh of the year for the freshman.
Â
In the fourth, the Rebels (27-24, 11-16) threatened as they put a two on with two outs but a leaping catch at the wall from Braden Montgomery put an end to the frame.
Â
The Maroon & White broke the game open in the sixth with a three-spot to stretch its lead to 4-0. After Montgomery plated the first run of the frame on an RBI fielder's choice, Ted Burton brought home a pair with a two-run double down the line in left.
Â
Jace LaViolette added to the lead in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to left that plated Chestnut, who reached on a bunt single.
Â
In the ninth, Chestnut used his speed to tack on the sixth and final run to the Texas A&M total. The senior reached on a wild pitch, advanced to second on a groundout, swiped third and scored on another wild pitch. Â
Inside the Box Score
The Aggies return home to Blue Bell Park March 16-18 for their final three-game set of the regular season against No. 3 Arkansas.
