FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The Texas A&M women's golf team was led by Sophomore Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio Friday who shot a 3-under 69 in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Legends Club.
"I was really happy with our finish, and we gained some momentum late in the round," head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "We didn't start off our best. They sped up the greens and we didn't really adjust to that very well. We started to get more comfortable at the end and hopefully we can carry that over into tomorrow. That finish was a step in the right direction"
As a team, Texas A&M shot 1-under 287 and was in a tie for 12th at the end of day one. South Carolina and Mississippi State led the field at 12-under 276. Fernández García-Poggio turned in a bogey-free scorecard that was marked up by three birdies on Nos. 4, 6 and 11. The Madrid, Spain, native was tied for 12th and three shots back of the lead on the individual leaderboard.
Adela Cernousek started the round with an early double bogey on No. 2 but clawed her way back under par with birdies on Nos. 7 and 8 and two more birds on 17 and 18 to turn in a 2-under 70. The All-American and reigning national champion held onto a share of 22nd.
Kynadie Adams sat two shots over par heading into 15 but birdied the hole and closed out the round with a 4 on the par-5, No. 18 to record an even-72. Adams was knotted up for 47th going into Saturday.
Lauren Nguyen and Vanessa Borovilos rounded out the lineup tied for 74th and in solo 88th, respectively.
