Stoiana Continues Run at ITA All-American Championships

CARY, N.C. – Texas A&M women's tennis continues action in the ITA All-American Championships at the Cary Tennis Center, highlighted by Stoiana's run in the singles consolation bracket of the main draw.

CARY, N.C. – Texas A&M women's tennis continues action in the ITA All-American Championships at the Cary Tennis Center, highlighted by Stoiana's run in the singles consolation bracket of the main draw.
 
Ten singles players from the ITA All-American Championships qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship, eight of those being main draw quarterfinalists and two being feed-in consolation finalists. Meanwhile, four doubles teams will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship.
 
No. 1 Mary Stoiana picked up her first win of the fall campaign versus Ohio State's No. 50 Sydni Ratliff in the main draw round of 64, downing the Buckeye, 6-1, 6-1. After falling in the round of 32, Stoiana bounced back with another ranked victory in the consolation bracket against UCLA's No. 83 Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer, 6-1, 7-5. The senior then toppled Pennsylvania's No. 63 Esha Velaga, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the consolation bracket round of 16, where she will take on South Carolina's No. 10 Sarah Hamner on Saturday.
 
Other Aggies competing in the tournament included No. 9 Nicole Khirin, No. 20 Mia Kupres, No. 68 Lucciana Perez and No. 88 Jeanette Mireles.
 
Khirin claimed her first win of the season against Stanford's No. 77 Valencia Xu, 6-1, 6-0, in the main draw round of 64. Khirin also paired with Mireles in the doubles portion of the qualifying bracket. The No. 55 ranked duo grabbed their first ranked victory versus Brigham Young's No. 52 Sue Yan Tan/Kendall Kovick in the consolation round of 16 qualifier.
 
Kupres squared off versus Duke's No. 53 Elizabeth Coleman in a close match that went three sets, but ultimately fell to the Blue Devil (6-4, 4-6, 4-6). Perez and Mireles battled opponents in the qualifying draw but were unable to make a run. Perez claimed her first ranked singles victory of the year in the consolation bracket, defeating Kansas's No. 116 Gracie Mulville (3-6, 6-4, 6-1).

No. 1 Stoiana is set to take on South Carolina's No. 10 Sarah Hamner in Saturday morning's consolation round of 16.
