Aggies Unveil R.A. “Murray” Fasken ’38 Indoor Track & Field Facility
Jan 10, 2024 | Track and Field
The nine-time national champion Texas A&M track & field program unveiled the new R.A. "Murray" Fasken '38 Indoor Track & Field, which debuts January 13.
"What anybody coming to Texas A&M knows is that there is a commitment to our sport here," head coach Pat Henry said. "We've won nine times, and these facilities certainly help us do that.".
With construction breaking ground just over a year ago, Coach Henry and the track & field program move into their new state-of-the-art indoor facility which shines bright on West Campus. The program now has two of the premier facilities in the nation, as they moved into E.B. Cushing Stadium in April 2019.
"I think that the general public will find it to be a more conducive venue," Henry added. "Fans are able to sit all the way around the facility, and that should make it a more intimate environment than we've had in the past."
The 130,000-square-foot facility features seating around three quarters of the track and additional seating by the throws area for fans to get the best view of the action. The facility can welcome over 4,000 spectators across all its seating sections.
The 200m track peaks at 12 degrees, the maximum allocated gradient from the world governing body, putting the Aggies facility among the major tracks in the nation.
"The angle of the bank at its highest point is 12 degrees," Henry said. "All of the major tracks in the United States are 12 degrees which puts us among the best in the country.".
The infield oval features eight 60m sprint lanes in addition to a pair of long and high jump pits and a pole vault section. Moving to the edge of the facility, the throws events will take place out of the same ring and that section will have its own seating arrangement.
Built with the athletes in mind, the facility was developed with six 60m sprint lanes at the end of the facility to aid athlete's warmups, along with a redeveloped outdoor warm up area where the former outdoor facility stood. The outdoor section features a 250m six lane track just steps away from the entry to the indoor.
"This facility comes with six 60m sprint lanes inside the building, along with a new outdoor warm up area," Henry said. "We repurposed the Anderson Track and built a new 250m practice track with a long straight away allowing another warmup area."
The Maroon & White hosts three events in their new venue this winter including the McFerrin-12 Degree Invitational (Jan. 13), the Ted Nelson Invitational (Jan. 20) and the Charlie Thomas Invitational (Feb. 2-3).
